HiSiaddi broke the limitations of national standard general products, completed triple customization of formula, components and solvents, and secured an annual long-term procurement order of 192 tons.
NordChem is located in Gothenburg, Sweden, with 27 years of R&D and production experience in high-end water-based industrial coatings, metal working fluids and closed circulating water chemicals for Northern Europe. Its products are supplied to Volvo automotive coating manufacturers, leading local Swedish paper mills and thermal power plant circulating water projects of Sweden Power Group. All end products comply with EU REACH, BPR biocide regulations and NKB environmental control standards of Northern Europe. Raw material indicators are directly linked to finished product environmental impact assessment and EU product registration certificates, making it a typical mid-to-high-end end manufacturer with finalized formulas and strict indicators that reject general national standard spot goods.
Previously, the enterprise imported original CMIT/MIT Kathon biocide from Rohm & Haas, USA. Due to surging overseas raw material prices and reduced production capacity of overseas factories, import procurement costs rose by 38% and sea transportation lead time extended to 85 days. In 2025, it launched a China-sourced raw material substitution plan, planning to purchase a total of 192 tons of customized CMIT/MIT in four batches throughout the year, divided into three major application categories: 96 tons for high-end industrial coating anticorrosion, 52 tons for fully synthetic cutting fluid anticorrosion, and 44 tons for low-temperature closed circulating water bacteriostasis.
The client independently contacted 4 conventional domestic isothiazolinone manufacturers at first, who only mass-produced general national standard products: mainstream 2.5% salt-containing Kathon and 14% high-concentration salt-containing stock solution. General products adopt a fixed CMIT:MIT ratio of approximately 3:1, take magnesium chloride as stabilizer and aqueous solution as carrier, all following the conventional formula system of national standard HG/T3657. Three fatal problems emerged successively after laboratory small-scale tests by the client:
1. Compatibility delamination in coating systems, with turbidity and precipitation occurring after 30 days of storage;
2. Rapid attenuation of bactericidal activity of cutting fluids in alkaline systems, failing to meet Northern Europe’s anticorrosion shelf-life standards;
3. Crystallization and solidification of stock solutions stored in tanks at -8°C, incompatible with winter warehousing conditions in Northern Europe.
All four manufacturers only mass-produced standardized spot goods without R&D capabilities for customized modification, unable to adjust ratios, solvents or stabilizer systems. The client’s procurement selection was stalled, and it fully entrusted HiSiaddi to coordinate the whole process of customized product development, sample verification and mass supply.
NordChem issued a detailed customized technical agreement with three indicators all exceeding conventional national standard parameters of China, serving as core customized demands for mid-to-high-end applications:
1. Customized active ingredient ratio: Abandon the fixed national standard CMIT:MIT ratio of 3:1, and customize three respective ratios for three product lines: 2.2:1 for coatings, 1.6:1 for cutting fluids, and 3.8:1 for circulating water, to accurately match the bacteriostasis curves of different formulas and control allergenic impurity content to meet EU limits for cosmetic additives.
2. Customized solvents and stabilizers: Eliminate traditional inorganic magnesium chloride stabilizers and deionized water carriers, replaced with a mixed organic solvent system of propylene glycol and dipropylene glycol to produce salt-free modified Kathon. This eliminates hidden risks of coating demulsification and metal workpiece rust caused by inorganic salts, with zero residual chloride ions in products.
3. Customized concentration and low-temperature stability: Discard the fixed common concentrations of 2.5% and 14% on the market, and customize exclusive concentrations: 10% for coatings, 8% for cutting fluids, 12% for circulating water. Requirements: No crystallization or delamination after 72h constant-temperature storage at -12°C; pH of stock solution controlled within a narrow range of 3.5~4.5; batch content fluctuation ≤±0.2%, far stricter than the national standard control limit of ±0.5%. Additional compliance customization: Products shall be attached with EU CLP-compliant SDS, REACH pre-registration documents and SVHC screening reports; outer packages shall be printed with bilingual hazard labels in Swedish and English.
Most domestic conventional isothiazolinone manufacturers design mass production processes targeting domestic sewage treatment and low-end daily chemical retail customers, mass-producing standardized national standard Kathon through continuous fixed-feeding production lines. Adjusting ratios or replacing solvents requires halting production to modify reactor feeding systems and replace auxiliary agents in the refining section. Most factories are unwilling to adjust production lines for small-batch customization. Some leading manufacturers accept customization, yet impose a minimum order quantity of 50 tons per single specification. The client only required 50kg samples per specification in the trial stage, leading to extremely high separate production costs, making it impossible for the client to complete sample development independently.
Relying on long-term cooperative R&D production bases in Shandong and Jiangsu with flexible R&D production lines for isothiazolinone (R&D base of BaiAo Chemical and Jiangsu Kaimeite Fine Chemical), HiSiaddi set up a technical team to decompose each customized indicator of the client item by item:
1. Fine-tune feeding ratios in the synthesis section according to three ratio requirements, adopt online HPLC liquid chromatography to monitor the generated content of CMIT and MIT monomers in real time, and accurately control the error of three ratios below 0.03% to avoid unstable bacteriostasis and excessive skin sensitization caused by unbalanced monomers.
2. Cancel magnesium chloride stabilizers, adopt a polyol composite chelation stabilization system, gradually replace pure water carriers with food-grade mixed propylene glycol and dipropylene glycol solvents, and remove inorganic synthesis by-products through full-process low-temperature refining to produce salt-free customized stock solutions.
3. Precisely allocate active substance concentrations for three specifications: 10% for coatings, 8% for cutting fluids, 12% for circulating water. Conduct repeated low-temperature cyclic freezing tests in small trials and optimize auxiliary formulas to achieve no crystallization at -15°C, exceeding the client’s customized requirement of -12°C.
HiSiaddi prepared three batches of 50kg customized samples for each specification. Full physical and chemical testing (content, pH, low-temperature stability, impurity ions) was first conducted at domestic CNAS-certified laboratories, then samples were airfreighted to NordChem’s central laboratory in Sweden. Meanwhile, EU GLP-qualified third-party institutions were entrusted to conduct bacteriostatic efficacy, compatibility and toxicology screening:
1. Coating samples were compounded with the client’s self-developed water-based acrylic coatings, showing no delamination or precipitation after 90 days of accelerated storage at normal temperature and 50°C, with the anticorrosion and bacteriostatic cycle meeting Northern Europe’s 18-month quality guarantee standard.
2. The customized cutting fluid product maintained a bactericidal rate decline of less than 5% after 2 months of storage at 60°C in an alkaline fully synthetic system with pH 9.2, solving the pain point of rapid activity loss of national standard general products.
3. The circulating water stock solution showed full transparency without crystallization in simulation tests of open-air tank storage at -10°C in Northern Europe, satisfying winter low-temperature storage conditions in northern Sweden. All three rounds of samples passed the client’s full-dimensional acceptance, finalizing the mass production customized formula.
Standardized mass production lines of original manufacturers are inconvenient for small-batch split-specification production scheduling. HiSiaddi coordinated factories to adopt flexible intermediate test reactors for zoned production, splitting the 192-ton order: the first trial order of 32 tons (16 tons for coatings, 9 tons for cutting fluids, 7 tons for circulating water) was delivered first, and the remaining 160 tons were scheduled for production in three quarterly batches. This eliminated the client’s need to meet the high minimum order threshold of large manufacturers while controlling production loss costs from formula switching. Exclusive labels for IBC tote tanks were customized simultaneously, printed with UN numbers, multilingual warning marks and EU local responsible person information in accordance with Swedish regulations.
Based on the component data of customized products, recompile Swedish-English bilingual SDS safety data sheets and revise hazard classification statements in accordance with CLP regulations. Leverage the factory’s REACH registration qualification to complete tonnage registration coverage for the full 192-ton annual order, and issue full SVHC substance of very high concern test reports and auxiliary BPR filing dossiers, providing one-stop solutions for the client’s supporting compliance demands of customized products.
1. The first batch of 32 tons of customized CMIT/MIT was smoothly shipped from Shanghai Port to Gothenburg Port, Sweden with hazardous goods customs declaration. The full set of customized compliance documents enabled one-time customs clearance without port detention or inspection abnormalities. After raw materials were warehoused and put into production for three product lines, the client’s finished products passed Northern Europe’s environmental certification at one inspection, successfully replacing the original imported raw materials from Rohm & Haas.
2. The subsequent three batches totaling 160 tons of customized products were delivered on schedule quarterly, completing the full performance of the 192-ton annual order. The comprehensive procurement cost decreased by 33.2% compared with the original US imported products, and sea transportation lead time was shortened from 85 days to 38 days.
3. NordChem officially signed a second-year annual customized CMIT/MIT procurement framework agreement of 240 tons with HiSiaddi, and simultaneously added customized procurement intentions for BIT, DCOIT and other isothiazolinone series products, appointing HiSiaddi as its exclusive customized raw material service provider in China.
1. Market Differentiation: Low-end clients purchase national standard spot goods with priority on low prices, while core demands of mid-to-high-end European and American clients include formula customization, indicator customization and compliance customization. Mid-to-high-end fine chemical end manufacturers in Northern Europe, Germany and other EU regions are restricted by environmental regulations and finalized formulas, making general national standard products incompatible with formula systems. Customization is an essential demand, yet a service gap that ordinary domestic factories cannot cover.
2. Core Value of HiSiaddi: Break the model of intermediaries merely earning price differences, connect customized demands of overseas clients with domestic refined flexible production resources, and deliver one-stop solutions covering formula R&D, sample testing, customized production scheduling and compliance documents, eliminating information gaps and supply chain barriers for overseas mid-to-high-end clients purchasing customized chemical raw materials in China.
3. Industry Trend: The domestic isothiazolinone industry faces overcapacity and cutthroat price competition for general Kathon. Relying on customized technical services to target mid-to-high-end end clients in Europe and America is the core path for foreign trade enterprises to break through homogeneous competition.
