    I. Client Profile

    Client: NutriCare B.V., the Netherlands A high-end Dutch enterprise specializing in special dietary and maternal & infant nutrition, the company produces infant formula powder, maternal nutrition tablets, and post-operative rehabilitation medical food. Its products are sold to high-end pharmacies, medical institutions and organic supermarkets across the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and other EU countries. The enterprise strictly complies with EU food additive standards, European Pharmacopoeia (EP), cGMP, REACH, IFS and non-GMO certifications. It imposes extremely stringent requirements on iron fortification raw materials and prioritizes EDTA ferric sodium featuring stable absorption, ultra-low impurities and strong compatibility, making it a technically oriented high-end buyer.

    The client developed a new generation of iron-fortified compound nutrients exclusively for infants and put forward multiple customized specifications. The initial order was set at 350 kg, with recurring monthly orders ranging from 600 kg to 900 kg. Detailed customized requirements are listed below:

    1. Main Content: Active ingredient of EDTA ferric sodium ≥99.0%, iron content 12.8%±0.2%, batch-to-batch content deviation ≤0.15%;

    2. Physical & Chemical Properties: Aqueous solution pH 4.5–5.0, excellent flowability, powder D90 particle size 70–90 μm, no moisture absorption or caking after compound blending;

    3. Impurity Control: Single heavy metal (lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic) ≤0.05 ppm, free EDTA residue ≤0.1%, sulfate and chloride levels far below EU limit values;

    4. Stability: Content attenuation ≤0.8% after 12 months of light-shielded ambient storage; no discoloration or chemical reactions when compounded with vitamins and minerals;

    5. Additional Requirements: Full-process traceability, EU-recognized English test documents, support for flexible small-batch production, and delivery within 32 days.

    The client previously contacted 4 domestic manufacturers, none of which could simultaneously meet strict standards for precise content control, low residue, customized particle size and long-term compound compatibility. Most suppliers only offered standard national standard grades with insufficient precision adjustment capabilities, halting the client’s new product R&D progress. The client entrusted HiSiaddi to coordinate resources and deliver full-process customized services covering formula adjustment, lab trials, pilot production, mass manufacturing and compliant delivery.

    II. Core Customization Challenges

    1.

    Difficulty in Precise Iron Content Control The synthesis reaction of EDTA ferric sodium is highly sensitive to raw material ratio, reaction temperature and pH value. Conventional products generally suffer iron content fluctuations above ±0.5%. The client demanded a tighter tolerance of ±0.2% alongside minimal batch deviation, which required full-parameter refined control over synthesis and crystallization procedures—unachievable with ordinary production lines.

    2.

    3.

    Hardship in Deep Removal of Free EDTA Residue Free EDTA is a strictly regulated impurity under EU regulations; excessive residue compromises product safety and compound compatibility. Conventional processes leave residual levels above 0.3%, failing to meet the client’s strict ≤0.1% threshold and necessitating additional purification procedures.

    4.

    5.

    Trade-off Between Particle Size and Flowability Excessively large powder particles lead to uneven mixing with other nutritional ingredients, while ultra-fine particles readily absorb moisture and cake, disrupting automated batching production. Furthermore, long-term co-storage with active substances like vitamins triggers physicochemical instability, discoloration and reduced potency.

    6.

    7.

    Conflict Between Flexible Small-Batch Production and Process Switching Mainstream domestic production lines are designed for large-volume mass production. Adjusting full sets of synthesis, crystallization, crushing and screening parameters solely for a 350 kg small order incurs high process switching costs and risks inconsistent batch quality.

    8.

    9.

    Complex High-End Compliance Documentation System EU regulations for medical food and infant food mandate process verification reports, impurity spectrum analysis, stability test data and full-chain traceability ledgers. Most factories lack complete documentation systems formatted to pass EU official audits.

    III. HiSiaddi Full-Process Customized Solution

    HiSiaddi screened leading domestic manufacturers specializing in food-grade chelated iron salts with high-end customization and export qualifications, then formed a joint technical team to tackle challenges across six core links: raw material selection, synthesis technology, purification & refinement, powder processing, quality control and compliance documentation.

    (1) Source Raw Material Control to Stabilize Base Content

    We uniformly source high-purity food-grade disodium EDTA and high-purity iron salts, conducting purity testing for every batch to eliminate substandard raw materials. An automated precise feeding system delivers raw materials at exact molar ratios to minimize compositional fluctuations from the source.

    (2) Optimized Synthesis & Crystallization to Regulate Iron Content and Residues

    A segmented temperature-controlled synthesis process maintains a constant reaction temperature of 75±1°C, with real-time online monitoring of system pH and dynamic fine-tuning of acid-base dosage to stabilize iron content within the 12.7%–12.9% range.

    Improved recrystallization adopts low-temperature slow crystallization to boost crystal purity. Additional multi-stage water washing and nanofiltration purification deeply remove free EDTA, sulfate and chloride impurities, limiting free EDTA residue to below 0.08%.

    (3) Specialized Powder Treatment to Balance Particle Size, Flowability and Compound Stability

    A combined airflow crushing and multi-stage vibrating screening process precisely controls powder D90 at 75–85 μm with concentrated particle distribution.

    Surface modification treatment is applied to powder to enhance hydrophobicity and anti-caking performance, eliminating moisture absorption and agglomeration during compounding and storage.

    Compound compatibility simulation tests optimize product pH to ensure no discoloration or chemical reactions occur after 12 months of ambient storage when blended with vitamins and minerals.

    (4) Flexible Production Scheduling & Full-Node Quality Control for Small-Batch Mass Production

    We coordinated the factory to prioritize this order on a dedicated flexible production line with independent production zones to avoid cross-contamination, meeting small-batch manufacturing demands.

    Five quality inspection gates are implemented: incoming raw material testing, mid-synthesis sampling, post-crystallization inspection, post-screening testing and finished product full inspection. Samples are retained for each batch with complete process parameter records to guarantee consistent batch quality.

    (5) EU-Standard Documentation System Development

    We compiled complete English documents aligned with Dutch and EU regulations: EP-standard Certificate of Analysis (COA), impurity spectrum analysis reports, real-time & accelerated stability test reports, full-process traceability ledgers, non-GMO declarations and cGMP/IFS qualification files, formatted to fully comply with EU official audit standards and delivered alongside goods.

    IV. Verification & Delivery Outcomes

    1. Lab Sample and Pilot Validation

    HiSiaddi first shipped 5 kg trial samples for full-item testing and compound compatibility trials at the client’s laboratory:

    · Active ingredient: 99.2%, iron content: 12.81% (within specified tolerance);

    · Free EDTA residue: 0.07%, all heavy metals ≤0.04 ppm, all impurity indicators qualified;

    · Powder D90: 82 μm, excellent flowability, no caking or discoloration after 30 days of compound storage;

    · Accelerated stability testing over 6 months recorded only 0.6% content loss, meeting long-term storage requirements.

    All sample indicators fully passed inspection, and the client confirmed finalized production processes.

    2. Bulk Delivery

    Mass production, sterile packaging and outer packaging of the 350 kg customized product were completed on Day 30 of the project, delivering goods 2 days ahead of schedule. Products were packed in food-grade light-proof aluminum foil bags sealed inside moisture-proof iron drums, suitable for ocean freight. Upon arrival in the Netherlands, the goods passed customs and client quality inspection in one go with zero quality or compliance issues.

    3. Deepened Long-Term Cooperation

    The raw material was applied to mass production of infant nutritional supplements with outstanding market feedback. The client formally designated HiSiaddi as its exclusive Chinese supplier for customized EDTA ferric sodium:

    · Fixed monthly recurring orders are placed using the customized process and standards developed for this project;

    · HiSiaddi was commissioned to develop two derivative customized products: low-sodium EDTA ferric sodium and composite chelated trace elements;
