Located in the Fine Chemical Industrial Park of Barcelona, Spain, this mid-to-high-end European terminal manufacturer (not a middleman) has 28 years of R&D and production experience in high-end solvent-free water-based wood varnishes, eco-friendly coatings for children’s furniture, and matte topcoats for solid wood. Its products are supplied to famous European solid wood furniture brands and infant homeware manufacturers, complying strictly with EU REACH, EU Regulation 10/2011 on food contact materials and EU VOC environmental control standards. The enterprise has long purchased EU-origin modified dipropylene glycol dibenzoate (DPDB) as plasticizer solvent, with an annual stable procurement volume of 52 tons. It belongs to a mid-to-high-end buyer with strict environmental indicators requiring targeted modification customization.
Against the backdrop of surging prices of local fine chemical raw materials in Europe, the production lead time for customized special grades from overseas original manufacturers has extended to 130 days, while small-batch modified customized orders are no longer accepted. The customer thus launched a localization substitution project for domestically produced dipropylene glycol dibenzoate. Conventional domestically available national standard dipropylene glycol dibenzoate suffers three universal drawbacks: easy solidification and precipitation at low temperatures, whitening and turbidity when blended with high-acid-value water-based acrylic resins, and precipitation of small molecular impurities after high-temperature baking of finished coatings, making it incompatible with the production conditions of eco-friendly wood coatings. The customer put forward four exclusive customized modification indicators differing from general industrial products on the market:
1. Low-temperature freeze resistance: Remain transparent without crystallization or stratification after sealed standing at -15°C for 72 hours, adapting to feeding production in northern Spain during cold winters;
2. Ultra-low acid value customization: Product acid value ≤0.1 mgKOH/g to avoid acid-base reactions with high-acid-value main acrylic resins and prevent incompatibility-induced whitening and flocculation;
3. Low residual small molecules: Purified via molecular distillation to eliminate volatile small molecule precipitation under 120°C high-temperature baking, meeting low VOC requirements for eco-friendly coatings;
4. Environmental compliance: Pass EU Regulation 10/2011 food contact migration testing for coatings applied on infant furniture.
The customer previously contacted three major domestic dipropylene glycol dibenzoate manufacturers independently to request test samples. Restricted by fixed esterification production lines, high technical transformation costs and mass production planning, all manufacturers only offered off-the-shelf mass-produced general-grade products and refused to adjust esterification catalytic systems and precision distillation refining processes for special modification. After six rounds of small-scale trial tests, none of the samples met coating application standards, forcing the customer to suspend mass production plans for its new eco-friendly children’s wood coatings. Recommended by the Spanish Coatings Industry Association, the customer fully entrusted HiSiaddi, a foreign trade service provider, to lead the whole customized implementation process covering raw material formula R&D, production process technical transformation, pilot trial production and cross-border compliance supporting services.
HiSiaddi set up a special project team consisting of plasticizer R&D engineers, esterification process specialists and EU compliance specialists. The team thoroughly analyzed the root causes of defects in general DPDB products, and collaborated with domestic specialized sophisticated fine chemical manufacturers to conduct targeted technical transformation across four core procedures: raw material proportioning, esterification catalysis, neutralization refining and post-treatment via molecular distillation.
Products synthesized via common processes contain excessive high-freezing-point isomers, which precipitate crystals when solubility drops under low temperatures. Guided by HiSiaddi, the factory adjusted the feeding ratio of dipropylene glycol and benzoic acid, replaced high-selectivity composite catalysts and optimized esterification temperature control curves to reduce the generation of high-freezing-point components from the source of synthesis.
General products adopt simplified neutralization procedures with high residual free benzoic acid, resulting in acid values ranging from 0.35 to 0.5 mgKOH/g. HiSiaddi optimized alkali washing neutralization and static stratification processes, extended refined water washing procedures and implemented multi-stage purification to strictly control free acid, stably keeping finished product acid value ≤0.1 mgKOH/g.
Conventional products only adopt simple atmospheric distillation for impurity removal, failing to eliminate monoesters and low-molecular impurities generated during esterification. A two-stage negative-pressure molecular distillation unit was added to remove light-component impurities through gradient vacuum temperature control and limit high-temperature volatilization.
General products use industrial-grade starting raw materials with trace heavy metals and benzene derivative residues exceeding limits. HiSiaddi instructed the factory to adopt food-grade starting materials, strictly control heavy metal introduction throughout the whole production process and reserve batch samples for special EU third-party food migration testing.
R&D personnel adjusted 5 groups of feeding ratios and 4 sets of distillation process parameters to produce multiple batches of gradient samples. Each sample was tested for four indicators: acid value, low-temperature stability, thermal volatilization and resin compatibility. The optimal formulated samples were sent to the customer’s R&D laboratory in Spain. The customer incorporated the modified DPDB into its proprietary water-based wood coating formula and produced test panels for full tests including low-temperature storage, resin compatibility, high-temperature baking, food migration and weather resistance. All indicators of the finalized formula passed inspection.
An independent pilot synthesis production line was activated separately from general product pipelines. HiSiaddi stationed on-site staff to supervise the whole process of esterification, neutralization and distillation, with sampling and inspection after each procedure. Pilot finished products were airfreighted to Spain for a 72-hour continuous industrial paint mixing test on the customer’s pilot coating line. The coating remained clear without white haze, no precipitation occurred during low-temperature storage, and VOC and environmental indicators of finished paint films matched European original products. The customer officially locked the exclusive customized grade.
The customer placed a first order of 14 tons of customized dipropylene glycol dibenzoate. The factory arranged independent production scheduling and separate tank marking in accordance with the finalized process, with full-item re-inspection of finished products before delivery. HiSiaddi simultaneously completed a full set of EU compliance formalities: relying on a cooperative EU Only Representative (OR) to complete batch-by-batch REACH import filing, commissioning EU-recognized laboratories to issue EU 10/2011 food contact test reports and batch SVHC screening reports, and compiling bilingual (Spanish + English) SDS documents and outer packaging GHS compliance labels in compliance with CLP regulations. Goods were declared and shipped from Shanghai Port, clearing customs smoothly before arriving at the customer’s factory in Barcelona, Spain.
1. Verified Mass Production Performance: All 14 tons of customized products were applied to the customer’s three production lines for eco-friendly wood coatings. The yield rate of finished coatings for children’s furniture rose from 85.2% when using domestic general-grade materials to 99.5%, enabling on-time delivery of orders for European infant homeware brands.
2. Optimized Procurement Cost: The comprehensive procurement cost of customized domestic products decreased by 33.2% compared with European original products, while the sea freight delivery cycle was shortened from 130 days to 39 days, significantly reducing capital occupation by raw material inventory.
3. Signed Annual Framework Agreement: After acceptance of the first batch, both parties signed an annual framework procurement contract for 52 tons of exclusive modified dipropylene glycol dibenzoate with monthly on-demand batch production and delivery. The customer continued to entrust HiSiaddi to develop a new low-viscosity modified DPDB for its upcoming solvent-free high-end floor coating R&D project.
4. Upgraded Product Portfolio of Upstream Factory: Supported by measured application data from the high-end Spanish customer, the cooperative factory finalized a standardized grade of low-temperature low-acid DPDB specially for coatings. With HiSiaddi’s support, the factory secured customized orders from two other high-end European wood coating enterprises in Portugal and Italy.
1. Major domestic manufacturers of dipropylene glycol dibenzoate focus on mass production of general industrial-grade products with fixed production lines. Restricted by technical transformation investment and production scheduling plans, most manufacturers are unwilling to separately optimize synthesis and refining processes for small-batch customized demands from high-end overseas buyers. Overseas high-end coating manufacturers that contact factories independently often face failed customization and repeated ineffective sample testing.
2. Core Service Value of HiSiaddi: Establish a full closed-loop customized service covering customer indicator decomposition → synthesis process optimization → multi-round sample iteration → pilot production supervision → cross-border compliance delivery, bridging the industrial chain gap between insufficient R&D capacity of additive manufacturers and personalized demands of high-end overseas end-users.
3. For mid-to-high-end eco-friendly coating clients in Europe and America, exclusive customized grade modification and full-chain compliant delivery are mandatory rigid requirements in addition to physical and chemical indicators of products. Integrated technology R&D plus cross-border compliance services constitute core competitiveness unavailable to ordinary spot trading companies.
