HiSiaddi overcame formula and mass production bottlenecks through full-process customized R&D, realizing localized production of exclusive grades.
The partner is NaturaCosmetics SAS, headquartered in the Seine Environmental Science and Innovation Park on the outskirts of Paris, France. It is a leading domestic French organic natural skincare brand covering four high-end product lines: organic essence, maternity & infant cream, natural essential oil, and single-use facial masks. All products are sold in beauty zones of Galeries Lafayette Paris, high-end organic supermarkets of Auchan, and premium beauty retail chains across Switzerland. Positioned in the EU organic ECOCERT-certified natural skincare track, all outer packaging and inner sachets for single-use masks must be fully compostable, free of precipitates, food-contact safe, and resistant to low-temperature bending.
For a decade, the brand exclusively purchased customized PBAT raw material (modified grade C1200) from BASF Germany. In 2025, affected by multiple factors including skyrocketing local European chemical raw material prices, a raised minimum order quantity of 120 tons per batch for BASF’s customized grades, and extended lead times up to 90 days, the client launched a localization substitution project for customized PBAT from China. The plan was to develop exclusive PBAT pellets for two core products: single-use independent mask packaging and leak-proof soft plastic inner pouches for essential oils. The initial customized demand stood at 75 tons, with a long-term annual procurement plan of 320 tons.
The client provided complete physical property indicators and EU compliance parameters, and collaborated with three major domestic PBAT manufacturers (Lanshan Tunhe, Kingfa Science & Technology, Kanghui New Materials) for customized sample testing. However, domestic factories could only slightly adjust additives based on existing general grades, failing to conduct molecular chain regulation and develop dedicated formulas to meet the client’s stringent standards. The client invested nearly 38,000 EUR in sample fees and completed six rounds of sample delivery, yet film blowing trials all presented four major defects: hot seal cracking, cold bending fracture under refrigeration, excessive oil migration, and substandard composting rate. The customization project stalled for nearly three months.
Recommended by the French Packaging Industry Association for Cosmetics, the client fully entrusted Shanghai HiSiaddi Technology as the general customization service provider. Leveraging HiSiaddi’s team of polymer engineers and collaborating with modification factories, we developed formulas from scratch and completed full-chain delivery including lab trials, pilot tests, and mass production. After 41 days, the exclusive PBAT grade was finalized, and the first batch of 75 tons of customized raw materials was successfully delivered. A long-term exclusive customized procurement framework was subsequently signed.
Product Category: Custom modified food-contact grade PBAT pellets for cosmetics HS Code: 3913900000 Packaging: 25kg standard export kraft bags lined with vacuum aluminum foil for moisture-proof storage
Unlike low-end daily packaging buyers, this mid-to-high-end French beauty brand set four rigid thresholds for customized PBAT, which mainstream domestic general PBAT grades could not satisfy:
1.
Mechanical Performance: Ultra-low temperature bending resistance + ultra-high heat-seal strength The finished mask film is only 18μm thick. It must withstand 1,000 bends without cracking under cold storage at -22°C in northern France, with elongation at break ≥720%. Heat-sealed edges must remain intact after 72 hours of immersion in 45°C essential oil. Conventional domestic PBAT grades lack low-temperature toughness and crack at -10°C; heat-sealed seams swell and crack upon contact with oil, making existing formulas unqualified.
2.
3.
Food Contact Compliance: Zero precipitation under EU 10/2011, compatible with oily skincare products All additives and catalysts in the PBAT formula must be listed in the EU food access inventory, with total migration of oil simulants ≤5mg/dm² (twice stricter than the national standard of 10mg/dm²). Titanium dioxide and low-cost industrial lubricants are prohibited. General modified formulas from domestic manufacturers commonly contain inorganic fillers and non-food-grade chain extenders, leading to excessive oil migration in SGS tests and non-compliance with EU regulations for direct contact with high-end skincare products.
4.
5.
Composting Performance: Compliance with both industrial and home compost per updated EN13432:2025 In line with the 2025 updated EU EN13432 standard: biodegradation rate ≥95% within 180 days, lead ≤20mg/kg, cadmium <0.1mg/kg, plus OK Compost Home certification for household composting. Most standard domestic PBAT only hold industrial compost certification, with biodegradation rates below 88% under ambient household composting conditions, failing to support the brand’s fully compostable marketing claims and EU customs inspection requirements.
6.
7.
Processing Adaptability: Compatibility with the client’s high-speed 3-layer co-extrusion film blowing line The client’s European imported high-speed co-extrusion equipment requires melt flow index (MFI) controlled within 3.2~3.8g/10min (200°C, 2.16kg), with melt strength fluctuation ≤±5%. General domestic PBAT grades feature a wide MFI span of 1–2 units per batch, causing frequent film bubble deviation, film rupture, and uneven thickness during high-speed film blowing, resulting in a yield rate below 82%.
8.
Restricted by mass production logic focused on standardized universal grades, domestic raw material manufacturers are reluctant to adjust polymerization processes and customized modification formulas for niche high-end cosmetic applications, limiting adjustments to minor additive dosages without optimizing PBAT molecular structures or monomer ratios at the source—bringing the client’s customization project to a standstill.
HiSiaddi formed a dedicated customization team consisting of polymer R&D engineers, foreign trade compliance specialists, and production process coordinators, and finalized a four-stage delivery roadmap: formula lab trials → 50kg sample verification → 500kg pilot debugging → mass production of 75 tons. We collaborated with a leading domestic PBAT modification factory to build an exclusive test line and resolved the four core customization challenges one by one.
1.
Substrate Selection & Molecular Chain Fine-Tuning We adopted high-purity virgin PBAT substrate from Lanshan Tunhe (self-supply of BDO and adipic acid with narrow molecular weight distribution). We coordinated the raw material plant to adjust chain segment ratios during polymerization and increase soft segment proportion to boost low-temperature toughness at the molecular level. Calcium carbonate, talc powder, and other inorganic fillers were eliminated entirely; only EU food-grade plant-based citrate tougheners and eco-friendly halogen-free chain extenders were used to eliminate precipitation risks from the source.
2.
3.
Custom Compound System Development A small proportion of food-grade high-transparency PLA was added as rigidity regulator to precisely balance film stiffness and ductility. Trace compliant organic nucleating agents were incorporated to optimize crystallization rate and simultaneously improve composting biodegradation efficiency. After screening 23 sets of lab formulas, the final definitive formulation was locked. SGS testing of lab samples recorded oil migration of only 3.2mg/dm², far below the client’s internal control limit of 5mg/dm².
4.
5.
Precise MFI Control Online melt monitoring equipment on twin-screw extruders was deployed to adjust screw speed and processing temperature in real time, stabilizing the finished product MFI at 3.5g/10min with batch fluctuation controlled within ±0.15, matching the processing window of high-speed co-extrusion equipment.
6.
After formula finalization, HiSiaddi coordinated the factory to produce 50kg customized PBAT samples, vacuum moisture-sealed and air-shipped to the client’s French plant. Continuous 72-hour full-operation film blowing trials of 18μm ultra-thin mask pouches were conducted on the original high-speed 3-layer co-extrusion line, delivering stable film bubbles without rupture and a yield rate lifted to 99.1%. Finished films were stored at -22°C for 72 hours and endured 1,000 bends without damage; heat-sealed edges remained intact after immersion in 45°C essential oil, passing all mechanical tests in one go. Samples were simultaneously sent to TÜV Rheinland European laboratories for full testing against the updated EN13432 standard for both industrial and home composting.
Based on machine trial data from small samples, a 500kg pilot batch was manufactured, and a complete set of mass production process documents (extrusion temperature range, screw shear rate, pelletizer cutter speed) was finalized to avoid physical property drift during large-scale production. Pilot finished products completed full REACH-SVHC screening and EU 10/2011 food contact testing. TÜV issued dual OK Compost Industrial & Home certification certificates, with a measured 180-day biodegradation rate of 96.2% and all heavy metal indicators below EU new regulatory limits. A full set of compliance documents was fully prepared.
Leveraging mature pilot processes, the 75 tons of customized PBAT were produced in two batches. HiSiaddi staff oversaw full on-site inspections at the factory, sampling every 20 tons for third-party laboratory testing to ensure consistent physical and compliance indicators across all batches matching the trial samples. Finished products were packed in food-grade vacuum aluminum foil lined moisture-proof kraft bags to prevent hydrolysis during long-distance ocean shipping. A complete archive of test reports, Declaration of Conformity (DoC), certification documents, and traceability ledgers was compiled for customs clearance at Shanghai Port, with shipment bound for Le Havre Port, France.
1.
Smooth Customs Clearance & Production Recovery for the Client, Recovering Previous Sample Losses Upon arrival of the 75 tons of customized PBAT, complete TÜV certification and compliance documents prepared in advance by HiSiaddi enabled customs clearance and warehousing in France within one working day. The raw materials fueled full-capacity production of mask single-use packaging and essential oil inner soft pouch lines, allowing the brand to launch new products as scheduled at Galeries Lafayette and high-end Auchan organic supermarkets and recoup the previous 38,000 EUR sample investment. The comprehensive procurement price of localized customized PBAT dropped by 31.5% compared to original imported BASF raw materials, and ocean transit lead time was shortened from 90 days to 32 days, drastically improving the client’s supply chain turnover efficiency. Half a year after the terminal products launched in France, eco-friendly packaging became a differentiated selling point, driving a 27% year-on-year sales increase for organic facial mask SKUs.

3.
Signing of Annual 320-Ton Exclusive Customized Procurement Framework for Long-Term Binding Service Forty-five days after mass production verification passed, NaturaCosmetics France signed an annual 320-ton exclusive customized PBAT procurement agreement with HiSiaddi. The contract stipulated that this customized formula grade would be exclusively supplied to the client and unavailable to other buyers. HiSiaddi established a permanent annual service mechanism: tracking annual updates to EU EN13432 and EU 10/2011 regulations, sending quarterly raw material samples for third-party retesting, and fine-tuning formulas in tandem with the client’s new packaging iterations. The client later entrusted HiSiaddi with R&D for second-generation modified PBAT for new infant skincare compostable packaging projects.

5.
Benchmark Case Supporting Market Expansion in Western European High-End Beauty Supply Chains This successful localization case for a leading French organic beauty brand established HiSiaddi as a benchmark customized service provider in Western Europe’s high-end natural beauty packaging raw material sector. Supported by the client’s local French beauty industry resources, we subsequently connected with three organic skincare brands of equivalent positioning in Spain and Belgium, replicating the standardized PBAT customization service model: indicator breakdown → formula customization → lab & pilot testing → full compliance delivery, and secured multiple batches of high-end customized PBAT foreign trade orders.
6.
Most domestic PBAT manufacturers focus on mass production of standardized general film-blowing and low-end disposable packaging grades. Restrained by technical transformation costs and R&D orientation, they lack refined customization capabilities for mid-to-high-end overseas niche sectors (premium cosmetics, organic food, maternity & infant goods), limited to minor additive adjustments on existing products rather than full-chain customization covering substrate and formula aligned with overseas brands’ stringent non-standard indicators. Meanwhile, mid-to-high-end European and American end clients impose multiple non-standard requirements on raw materials regarding food safety, low-temperature physical performance, eco-compostability, and processing compatibility, making standard domestic PBAT grades difficult to match—this constitutes the primary barrier preventing domestic biodegradable materials from entering high-end European supply chains.
Breaking the traditional foreign trade model of simple raw material distribution, HiSiaddi integrates polymer material technology and EU compliance expertise to close the customization loop: client indicator deconstruction → targeted formula R&D → graded sample verification → solidified mass production processes → full compliance delivery. We compensate for domestic manufacturers’ shortcomings in refined customization and enable domestic PBAT to match the performance of premium European imported grades. Against the backdrop of global plastic restriction policies and continuously tightened EU environmental regulations, customized technical services have become the core competitiveness for domestic PBAT to steadily penetrate mid-to-high-end overseas niche markets.
