Case: Exclusive Customized Natural L-Linalool Project for AromaItal, a High-End Organic Fragrance Group from Italy

    Basic Project Background

AromaItal is a benchmark mid-to-high-end fragrance enterprise in Europe. It operates three core business lines: light luxury salon perfumes in Milan and Florence, organic skincare stock solutions for pregnant women and infants, and premium fruit flavor food essences. Its products are sold at luxury beauty boutiques in Milan and Michelin bakery chains. The company has long sourced natural L-linalool from BASF (Germany) and Givaudan (Switzerland), with all products complying with six access standards: COSMOS natural organic certification, EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223, IFRA Standard 51, FCC food grade, REACH and Kosher certification.

Due to shrinking production capacity of local European spice manufacturers, a 35% continuous surge in raw material prices and extended delivery cycles exceeding 90 days, the client launched localized customized alternative procurement in China for the first time. Conventional mass-produced linalool manufactured in China failed to meet four mandatory customized indicators in physical and chemical properties, aroma, traceability and allergen control. Multiple major domestic spice manufacturers only offered standard national stock products and refused flexible customization, halting the client’s customization project and delaying new product R&D due to raw material bottlenecks. The client entrusted HiSiaddi with full authority to connect domestic factories and deliver the full-chain exclusive customized production.

The client’s customized product positioning differs from low-end daily chemical general linalool: it rejects industrially synthesized racemic linalool and standard national-grade natural linalool, and only customizes exclusive-grade L-linalool extracted from linalool forests in Yunnan with high levorotatory optical purity, low allergenicity and full traceability. The initial customized order is 32 tons, with an annual framework procurement volume of 160 tons in subsequent years.

    I. Five Non-Standard Mandatory Customization Requirements of the Client (Refined Premium Indicators Unavailable in Off-the-Shelf Products)

    1. Customized Raw Material Source

Only crude oil obtained by steam distillation of fresh leaves from standardized organic linalool plantations at an altitude above 1,200m in Pu'er, Yunnan is permitted; camphor raw materials from Guangxi, southern Jiangxi and other regions are prohibited to avoid mixing with camphor oil from other producing areas. Each batch must be accompanied by English archived documents including woodland planting ledgers, pesticide residue test reports, harvesting and processing records, and crude oil factory incoming documents, as required by the COSMOS organic label.

    2. Customized Optical Configuration

L-Linalool content ≥99.2%, specific rotation ranging from -19.8° to -20.5°; racemic synthetic products are strictly forbidden. Most domestically produced standard natural linalool on the market has an L-linalool content of only 93%~97%, while synthetic linalool is a non-optically active racemate, failing to meet the layered aroma requirements for high-end perfume blending and bioactivity demands for skincare products. Mandatory client indicators: total linalool ≥99.5%, L-isomer proportion ≥99.2%, dextrorotatory impurities <0.3%.

    3. Customized Impurity & Allergen Control

26 IFRA-regulated allergenic substances subject to limit control; single impurities including camphor and eucalyptol terpenes ≤5ppm. IFRA Standard 51 imposes stricter limits on raw materials for leave-on skincare products. Crude distillation processes adopted by conventional domestic linalool manufacturers lead to excessive accompanying limonene, linalool oxide and camphor, making such products unsuitable for leave-on skincare for pregnant women and infants. Client requirements: full-component GC-MS testing, all harmful terpene impurities controlled below 5ppm, free acid ≤0.05%.

    4. Customized Aroma Profile

Retain natural fresh floral base notes, eliminate chemical burnt bitter off-notes, and fine-tune trace accompanying linalyl acetate to 0.4%~0.6%. Standard distillation removes trace natural ester derivatives simultaneously, resulting in thin aroma. The client’s perfumer specified retaining a small amount of natural linalyl acetate to optimize fragrance; standardized mass-produced goods have fixed component ratios and cannot adjust this indicator.

    5. Customized Graded Packaging & Filling

200L galvanized iron drums with food-grade internal coating, divided into three separate filling grades: perfume grade, skincare grade and food grade. Drum surfaces printed with bilingual CLP-compliant labels in English and French.

II. Core Obstacles Encountered by the Client During Independent Pre-Project Communication

The client previously contacted four major domestic spice manufacturers independently: NHU, Jiangxi Huaxiang, Jiangxi Xinsen and Anhui Shanhe, and encountered the following problems:

    1. Major manufacturers prioritize standardized mass production with fixed distillation parameters on production lines. Customized process adjustment requires production line shutdown and commissioning, yielding low economic benefits for small-batch 32-ton customized orders. Factories prefer to supply ready-made stock and refuse non-standard distillation customization.

    2. Small and medium-sized factories support flexible production adjustment but lack precision separation equipment for levorotatory isomers and EU-compliant testing capabilities, unable to issue COSMOS traceability documents and batch-specific IFRA statements.

    3. Most domestic manufacturers produce in accordance with national standards, lacking understanding of EU allergen control rules for maternal and infant products and precise control standards for trace components.

III. HiSiaddi Delivers Full-Chain Customized Development in Six Segments

Supported by spice technical engineers, compliance specialists and supply chain teams, HiSiaddi screened manufacturers equipped with flexible distillation production lines and self-owned raw material bases in Yunnan, delivering full-process customization covering raw material source control → customized process commissioning → sample trial production → pilot scale-up & mass production → customized compliance documents → customized packaging:

Segment 1: Secure Upstream Raw Material Bases & Realize Traceability Customization

HiSiaddi partnered with contracted organic linalool planting cooperatives in Pu'er, Yunnan to secure exclusive fresh leaf supply during harvesting seasons for centralized crude oil distillation. Third-party SGS test reports for pesticide residues (organophosphorus, heavy metals Pb/As) are issued batch by batch, and complete English traceability archives (planting certificates, harvesting slips, crude oil delivery orders) are compiled to pass COSMOS raw material traceability audits.

Segment 2: Collaborate with Factories to Retrofit Distillation Processes for Levorotatory Configuration Customization

The factory’s combined production line of three-stage low-pressure gradient distillation and short-path molecular distillation was activated for staged temperature-controlled fractionation: low-boiling terpenes removed under low pressure, levorotatory linalool fractions precisely cut, and trace dextrorotatory isomers eliminated in final fine separation. After three rounds of process parameter adjustment, the finished product maintained a stable specific rotation of approximately -20.1° with L-linalool content of 99.35%, fully meeting the client’s optical indicators.

Segment 3: Refined Purification to Meet IFRA Low-Allergen Custom Standards

Secondary precision distillation purification targeting allergenic impurities including camphor and oxidized terpenes was implemented. Every batch undergoes full-component screening at EU-qualified laboratories before delivery; all 26 IFRA allergenic substances fall below regulatory limits with single harmful impurities stably controlled at ≤3ppm, superior to the client’s 5ppm upper limit. Exclusive IFRA Standard 51 compliance statements are issued for each batch.

Segment 4: Fine-Trace Component Adjustment to Complete Aroma Customization

Trace natural linalyl acetate is precisely retained at the final distillation stage with real-time monitoring via central control GC, stabilizing its content at 0.52%. This preserves mellow natural floral notes without excessive ester interfering with the client’s perfume formula. Five gradient sample versions were delivered for three rounds of blind evaluation by Italian perfumers before final confirmation of the product formula.

Segment 5: Three-Tier Sample System: Small Samples → 50kg Pilot Batch → 32-Ton Mass Production

    1. Small samples: 5 × 100g specimens airfreighted to Italy R&D center for physical-chemical testing, sensory evaluation and full-index detection;

    2. Pilot batch: 50kg trial production to verify production line stability and re-test all indicators;

    3. Mass production of the full 32-ton order after formula confirmation.

Segment 6: Customized Packaging & SDS Documents Compliant with EU CLP Regulations

Food-grade internally coated iron drums manufactured to client specifications, with bilingual CLP hazard labels, INCI names and Italian importer information printed on drum surfaces in English and French. HiSiaddi compliance specialists compiled 16-section bilingual SDS safety data sheets in English and French in accordance with the latest EU GHS standards, supplemented with REACH filing documents, free sales certificates and graded COA test reports (three separate quality inspection certificates for perfume, skincare and food grades).

IV. Inspection, Shipment & Subsequent Long-Term Cooperation

    1. Pre-shipment Inspection: The client dispatched quality control specialists to China for on-site sampling, with full compliance of all physical-chemical, optical rotation, impurity and aroma indicators verified. The 32-ton product was packed in three specifications and shipped as a full container from Shanghai Port to Genoa Port, Italy. All documents passed EU customs clearance without compliance hold-ups.

    2. Formula Implementation: The client deployed customized linalool to complete formula development for three new products: salon perfume, organic maternal-infant skincare and premium bakery flavorings. CPSR cosmetic safety assessments were successfully passed, and new products launched as scheduled at high-end offline boutiques across Italy.

    3. Annual Long-Term Agreement Signing: Localized customized procurement reduced overall costs by 31% compared to original Givaudan imports, and delivery cycles were shortened from over 90 days to 38 days. The client terminated partial raw material procurement from European manufacturers and signed a 160-ton annual customized framework agreement with six scheduled batches. The group’s subsidiaries in Spain and Portugal subsequently sourced customized domestic linalool series via HiSiaddi.

    V. Project Summary

    1. Characteristics of mid-to-high-end client customization: Unlike low-end daily chemical buyers who only focus on unit price and national standard content, European and American high-end organic fragrance clients prioritize five non-standard requirements: origin traceability, optical configuration, trace impurity control, aroma fine-tuning and cross-border regulatory compliance, which cannot be fulfilled by standardized off-the-shelf products.

    2. Domestic industry pain points: Spice manufacturers prioritize standardized mass production with low willingness to adjust production lines for customized orders, and lack supporting EU regulatory service capabilities, creating barriers for overseas clients to independently source personalized customized raw materials.

    3. Core Value of HiSiaddi: Connect upstream raw material bases, production factories, third-party testing institutions and EU compliance agencies, reverse-customize raw material processes based on client formulation requirements, and deliver a full customization chain covering "origin – production – testing – documentation – export", bridging information and technical barriers between China and overseas markets.
