The client demanded 6N-grade (99.9999%) anhydrous lithium iodide, with total metallic impurities (Na, K, Ca, Mg) ≤1 ppm and sodium ion capped at 0.3 ppm, alongside water content ≤10 ppm. Conventional industrial-grade lithium iodide produced domestically only reaches 3N–4N, while mainstream battery-grade material tops out at 5N. Mass production of 6N-grade lithium iodide presents extremely high technical barriers, requiring high-purity hydroiodic acid raw materials, anhydrous and oxygen-free synthesis environments, and multi-stage purification processes. Most manufacturers can only deliver 5N-grade products and fail to meet the specifications.
Lithium iodide readily absorbs moisture to form lithium iodide trihydrate (LiI·3H₂O). To remove crystal water without oxidation and discoloration, high vacuum (-0.1 MPa) dehydration above 120°C with full nitrogen blanketing is mandatory. Additionally, the client required a narrow particle size distribution of D50=15±2 μm, which calls for customized crystallization and pulverization processes. Ordinary manufacturers cannot simultaneously satisfy the dual non-standard requirements of anhydrous state and targeted particle size.
The client’s annual demand of 120 kg is split into six batches of 20 kg each, qualifying as a small-batch highly customized order. Large manufacturers are unwilling to adjust production lines for such volumes, while small manufacturers lack sufficient technical capacity. Moreover, solid-state batteries impose stringent consistency standards on raw material batches, with impurity, moisture and particle size fluctuations limited to ±5%. Most domestic suppliers fail to deliver stable batch-to-batch performance.
Lithium iodide with purity ≥99.99% falls under controlled dual-use items, requiring a dual-use item export license. The client also requested REACH registration documents, CNAS-certified COAs, full process parameter records, and batch traceability reports.
