The purchaser is EURO-PLAS New Materials Co., Ltd., Germany, specialized in production of mid-to-high-end automotive precision PC/ABS, medical-grade modified materials and industrial PPO/HIPS raw materials, whose products support BMW automotive interior housings, Class II European medical consumables and industrial precision electrical components. Products must comply with REACH, RoHS, EU LFGB food contact and full UL certifications. The company has long purchased original FP600 grade BDP (bisphenol A bis(diphenyl phosphate)) from Japan’s ADEKA. Due to rising European import tariffs and extended Japanese delivery lead times by 35 days, it launched a localized raw material replacement project with an annual rigid demand of 280 tons of BDP, delivered in 12 monthly batches.
The client initially independently contacted five mainstream domestic BDP manufacturers: Zhejiang Wansheng, Jiangsu Yake, Shandong Morechem, Hubei Dongxin and Guangdong Yuanda for sample submission and testing. 2. Yake focuses on promoting high thermal stability grades without elaborating Wansheng’s mass production stability and bulk cost advantages.
3. Shandong Morechem mainly promotes economical general BDP, avoiding shortcomings of its high-end modified grades and performance gaps compared with high-purity products from the two leading manufacturers.
4. Small and medium manufacturers Dongxin and Yuanda prioritize low-price mass-market products, deliberately weakening their disadvantages of low monomer content and poor thermal weight loss performance.
The client’s R&D team only possesses a benchmark database for Japanese BDP and lacks familiarity with grade classification, process routes and indicator differences of domestic brands. Seven samples were received from five manufacturers with inconsistent n1 monomer content, TPP residue, thermal weight loss and acid value parameters. Three types of abnormalities appeared during lab trials: blooming of partial samples during high-temperature injection molding, unstable flame retardant ratings of some batches, and failure of medical material specimens to pass LFGB migration testing. The localization selection project stalled after 45 days of ineffective trials, and stock of original Japanese raw materials was about to be exhausted. The client fully entrusted HiSiaddi, the foreign trade service provider, to conduct neutral evaluation of five leading domestic brands, sort out advantages and disadvantages of each grade in detail, and accurately screen matching grades based on the client’s three major application scenarios (automotive modification, medical PC, PPO electrical materials).
Mandatory material selection thresholds set by the client (mid-to-high-end selection standards, differentiated from low-end general materials):
1. Automotive / General PC/ABS: BDP n1 monomer ≥90%, free TPP ≤0.3%, 5% thermal weight loss ≥310°C.
2. Medical-grade exclusive use: n1 monomer ≥93%, TPP ≤0.18%, acid value ≤0.03 mgKOH/g, full LFGB migration compliance.
3. PPO/HIPS high-temperature extrusion: 5% thermal weight loss ≥335%, low volatilization, no die precipitation after long-term high-temperature processing.
Leveraging its phosphorus-based flame retardant raw material database and parallel testing by third-party SGS laboratories, HiSiaddi filed classification records for mainstream grades of five brands: Wansheng, Yake, Morechem, Dongxin and Yuanda, objectively listing advantages and disadvantages of products of each brand to break the barrier of one-sided manufacturer promotion. Core products of the five brands are analyzed as follows:
Main grades: WSFR-BDP standard general grade, WSFR-BDP-H high-purity modified grade
· Advantages: Large-scale continuous production lines with top-tier batch stability and minimal mass production fluctuations; WSFR-BDP-H features n1 monomer ≥93.6%, TPP ≤0.17%, complete LFGB and REACH compliance filings, suitable for strict medical-grade working conditions; conventional WSFR-BDP offers outstanding cost performance with controllable bulk costs for mass automotive raw material usage.
· Disadvantages: High thermal stability PPO-exclusive customized grades require high minimum order quantities (≥15 tons per batch), with low flexibility for small-batch trial orders.
Main grades: YK-BDP-89 general grade, YK-BDP-94 ultra-high purity heat-resistant grade
· Advantages: YK-BDP-94 undergoes secondary negative pressure rectification with a 5% thermal weight loss temperature up to 375°C, representing top-tier heat resistance indicators domestically, perfectly compatible with PPO/HIPS high-temperature extrusion; product APHA chroma ≤30 with low precipitation and excellent adaptability for precision electronic components; low minimum order quantity for lab trial samples and flexible R&D fine-tuning.
· Disadvantages: Unit prices of mass-produced high-purity grades are higher than equivalent grades from Wansheng, leading to elevated comprehensive procurement costs for bulk automotive raw materials.
Main grades: MR-BDP conventional industrial grade, MR-BDP-M mid-end modified grade
· Advantages: Low unit prices for conventional industrial BDP, targeting low-end household appliance general modification; mid-end modified grades adapt to ordinary non-compliant modified materials.
· Disadvantages: Maximum n1 monomer content across all series only reaches 87%~89%, free TPP generally exceeds 0.45%, thermal weight loss at approximately 302°C, failing to effectively meet strict low-precipitation LFGB requirements for medical and automotive mid-to-high-end applications, inconsistent with the client’s mid-to-high-end positioning.
· Advantages: Sufficient spot inventory, no minimum order quantity thresholds, lowest quotations.
· Disadvantages: Batch chroma and indicator fluctuations exist due to batch reactor synthesis processes; n1 monomer content mostly ranges from 82%~86%, TPP residue 0.5%~1.2%, no LFGB or FDA compliance filings, prone to blooming and precipitation at high temperatures, only suitable for low-end daily plastic products.
Morechem, Dongxin and Yuanda were eliminated (product indicators failed to meet the client’s mid-to-high-end compliance and performance thresholds). Two leading domestic mid-to-high-end brands Wansheng and Yake were selected, with three targeted grades implemented to match materials for the client’s three production lines one-to-one:
1. Wansheng WSFR-BDP-H (High-Purity Modified Grade) → Exclusively for medical-grade PC/ABS consumable production lines: n1 monomer = 93.7%, TPP = 0.16%, acid value 0.024 mgKOH/g, complete LFGB, REACH and SVHC compliance documents. Medical material lab samples showed no precipitation after 72h high-temperature accelerated aging, passing third-party migration testing in Germany, fully meeting Class II medical consumable access standards.
2. Wansheng WSFR-BDP (Standard Mass Production Grade) → Bulk material for BMW automotive interior PC/ABS: n1 monomer = 91.2%, TPP = 0.27%, excellent mass production stability with optimal bulk procurement costs. After replacement, finished automotive interior pellet yield matched original Japanese FP600 products, reducing raw material procurement costs by 27%.
3. Yake YK-BDP-94 Ultra-High Heat-Resistant Grade → Exclusive for PPO/HIPS industrial electrical housings: 5% thermal weight loss of 372°C, no oil accumulation at dies or small molecule volatilization after long-term twin-screw extrusion at 290°C, resolving trace high-temperature precipitation issues of original Japanese materials. Oxygen index of finished PPO products stabilized above 33 with consistent UL94 V0 rating.
Lab samples of the three grades were tested synchronously on three formulations covering performance, precipitation and flame retardancy for three rounds, all meeting or slightly exceeding performance of original Japanese ADEKA products. The client’s R&D department confirmed correct grade selection.
Pilot materials were shipped in three batches, with 72-hour uninterrupted mass production on three production lines free of blooming, delamination and unstable flame retardancy. Incoming inspections by downstream BMW and medical OEM clients passed at one time.
After full pilot batch approval, EURO-PLAS formally signed a 280-ton annual order: total 215 tons of two Wansheng grades (65 tons medical grade + 150 tons automotive grade), 65 tons of Yake heat-resistant grade (PPO exclusive), with fixed monthly production scheduling and batch delivery.
