Client: France Polytech A renowned European high-end modified material manufacturer specializing in glass fiber reinforced PA and PP engineering plastics, its products are supplied to civil interior parts of Renault, Peugeot and Airbus. The company strictly complies with EU REACH, RoHS, UL94 V-0, low vehicle interior volatile emission, weather resistance and anti-aging standards. As a quality-oriented mid-to-high-end client, it imposes stringent requirements on the powder properties, processing compatibility and long-term service stability of flame retardants, and does not prioritize short-term procurement cost differences.
The client developed a new generation of lightweight automotive flame-retardant plastics and designated Piperazine Pyrophosphate (PAPP) as the core halogen-free flame retardant, putting forward multiple exclusive customized indicators. In the early stage, it contacted multiple domestic manufacturers, which could only supply general mass-produced models without capacity for process and physical property customization, stalling its R&D progress. The client finally entrusted HiSiaddi with full responsibilities including technical coordination, formula process optimization, multiple rounds of sampling, pilot mass production and delivery implementation.
Combined with high-temperature injection molding and long-term vehicle service conditions, the client specified four customized indicators, which also constituted unbreakable technical bottlenecks of general-grade PAPP:
1. Customized Particle Size & Flowability: Median particle size D50 controlled within 2.5~4μm, narrow particle size distribution, loose powder free of agglomeration to adapt to automatic continuous batching production lines and avoid material blockage and uneven feeding. General commercial PAPP usually has a D50 of 6~10μm and tends to agglomerate.
2. Ultra-Low Water Absorption: Normal-temperature water absorption ≤0.18%, to cope with high-humidity storage environments in rainy Europe and eliminate bubbles formed inside finished products caused by raw material moisture absorption. The water absorption rate of ordinary PAPP is generally higher than 0.4%.
3. High Heat Resistance & Low Precipitation: Thermal decomposition temperature ≥290℃, matching the 270~285℃ high-temperature injection molding process, with no flue gas or substance precipitation during processing to prevent mold fouling and surface whitening of components.
4. Low Free Monomer: Free piperazine content ≤0.08% to meet EU low volatile emission control requirements and avoid corrosion of precision parts caused by precipitation after long-term service.
Most domestic manufacturers focus on mass production of standard products and are unwilling to adjust synthesis, crystallization and post-treatment processes for customized orders, with low willingness to conduct R&D for small-batch customization, making it difficult to fulfill the client’s demands.
HiSiaddi set up a technical coordination team and collaborated with cooperative domestic manufacturers specializing in high-end phosphorus-based flame retardant R&D. We followed the workflow of demand decomposition → process modification → iterative sampling → performance verification → exclusive mass production → compliance supporting to tackle each technical bottleneck one by one.
A special seminar was held with technical teams from both sides, and Chinese-English technical agreements were signed to lock testing standards and indicator thresholds. Laboratory testing and analysis identified the defects of general-grade products as follows: extensive crystallization processes leading to oversized particles and uneven distribution; porous and hydrophilic powder surfaces resulting in high moisture absorption; incomplete reactions and simple purification procedures causing excessive free monomers and easy precipitation under high temperatures. Targeted process modification plans were formulated accordingly.
Adjust the pH value of the synthesis system, adopt a stepwise slow cooling crystallization process to optimize crystal morphology, and deploy high-precision air classification equipment to accurately sieve out coarse particles. The D50 value was stably controlled at around 3.2μm with a greatly narrowed particle size distribution range, significantly improving powder flowability.
Add an eco-friendly silane composite coating procedure in the final production stage to seal hydrophilic micropores on powder surfaces; upgrade high-temperature vacuum drying systems and extend constant-temperature drying duration. The final water absorption rate reached 0.16%, far exceeding the client’s requirements.
Accurately adjust raw material feeding ratios and reaction holding time, and add two-stage countercurrent water washing procedures to fully remove unreacted piperazine monomers. The free piperazine content of finished products was reduced to 0.06%. Meanwhile, low-boiling impurities in the system were eliminated, lifting the thermal decomposition temperature to 293℃ to satisfy high-temperature processing demands.
· First batch sample: Particle size and heat resistance met standards, but water absorption slightly exceeded the limit. The team fine-tuned coating agent dosage and drying parameters to complete rectification.
· Second batch sample: All physical and chemical indicators fully met requirements. The client carried out formula mixing and injection molding trial production, and finished products stably reached UL94 V-0 flame retardant grade with smooth surfaces free of precipitation and bubbles.
The client completed high-low temperature cycling, anti-aging and volatile substance tests, and all data complied with automotive material standards, formally locking the mass production process.
The manufacturer opened an independent production line for customized products with partitioned production to prevent cross-contamination with general-grade PAPP. The first customized order of 3 tons was produced with on-site technical staff conducting full-cycle inspections, and each batch was sampled for full testing.
English COA, particle size distribution diagrams, thermogravimetric analysis reports and third-party impurity testing reports were delivered with goods to ensure full batch traceability.
Adopt thickened aluminum foil vacuum inner bags plus waterproof stretch film outer packaging to strengthen moisture resistance, suitable for ocean shipping and European warehousing. English product names, customized model numbers, batch numbers and compliance marks were printed on outer packages. A full set of documents including REACH, RoHS, SVHC screening reports and English GHS SDS were provided simultaneously, alongside Chinese-English usage guidelines clarifying feeding ratios, storage conditions and processing parameters.
1. Full fulfillment of customized demands: The 3-ton customized PAPP was delivered smoothly, with all indicators exceeding agreed standards, fully compatible with the client’s injection molding production line. Finished products passed full certification tests of Renault and Peugeot vehicle manufacturers.
2. Improved production efficiency: Smooth powder feeding without blockage or agglomeration; no precipitation or bubbles during injection molding, with a stable production yield above 99%.
3. Long-term in-depth cooperation: The client designated this customized PAPP as the primary raw material for automotive modified plastics, placing stable monthly orders of 2~3 tons, and later transferred all customized and procurement businesses of multiple flame retardant additives to HiSiaddi.
4. Word-of-mouth market expansion: The client recommended HiSiaddi’s customization services to two other local high-end material enterprises in France, further expanding European market resources.
As a typical mid-to-high-end client, the French purchaser prioritized not only raw materials but also customized processes and comprehensive solutions adapted to high-end working conditions. Most domestic manufacturers stuck to general mass production models lacking refined customization capabilities, hindering the client’s R&D progress.
Relying on upstream and downstream technical resources, HiSiaddi completed full-link process upgrades covering synthesis, crystallization, surface modification and purification to resolve the client’s customized challenges in one stop. Breaking away from the traditional pure supply trade model, we built trust centered on technical services and successfully transformed into a high-end flame retardant customized solution service provider, establishing long-term stable strategic cooperation with the client.
