Autopur is a mid-to-high-end European supplier of foaming raw materials for automotive interiors, producing cold-curing high-resilience foam for Mercedes-Benz and BMW seats, headrests and armrests. Its products comply with EU REACH, ELV automotive environmental regulations, low-VOC standards and strict OEM incoming inspection criteria, with an annual procurement volume of high-resilience polyether polyols reaching 220 tons. It had long imported original polyethers from BASF. Faced with surging European raw material prices, delivery cycles starting at 65 days and a minimum order threshold of 40 tons, the customer planned localized substitution and entrusted HiSiaddi to screen matching grades in China.
The customer independently contacted five major domestic mid-to-high-end polyether manufacturers (Wanhua Chemical, Bluestar Dongda, INOV, Hongbaoli and Changhua Chemical) for quotations and samples yet encountered selection deadlocks:
1. All manufacturers only promoted their own products and avoided highlighting competitor advantages. None provided objective horizontal parameter comparisons or adaptation analysis aligned with the customer’s German foaming line operating conditions. Each manufacturer claimed its grades matched BASF 330N high-end raw materials, yet differed significantly in indicator focus, impurity control and foaming tolerance. Lacking a domestic raw material database, the customer could not distinguish quality solely based on manufacturer samples.
2. Customer Shortcomings: German engineers are familiar with European polyether systems yet lack understanding of process routes, quality control standards and impurity control differences among domestic brands. Independent small-scale testing with 5 sample grades yielded inconsistent foam resilience, abnormal closed-cell performance during low-temperature foaming and fluctuating VOC levels, making it impossible to lock the optimal grade and halting material selection.
3. Mandatory Customer Selection Indicators: Tri-functional high-resilience polyether with hydroxyl value 56±2mgKOH/g, primary hydroxyl group ≥72%, moisture ≤0.04%, unsaturation ≤0.01mol/kg, low odor and low VOC; compatible with the customer’s automated high-pressure cold-mold foaming line, with foam resilience ≥62% and compression set ≤6% to meet EU automotive interior environmental access standards.
Leveraging industry technical resources for polyethers, HiSiaddi independently obtained authoritative COAs, third-party test reports and downstream automotive application cases from the five manufacturers. Excluding manufacturer marketing bias, it neutrally analyzed core grades, product strengths, weaknesses and applicable scenarios of the five brands, compiling a bilingual Chinese-English material selection manual.
Core Grades: F3128, F3135 (Dedicated for High Resilience)
· Advantages: Integrated PO+MDI industrial chain with continuous production lines, minimal batch indicator fluctuations, primary hydroxyl content above 75%, metal ion impurities ≤2ppm and low VOC; designated supplier for multiple domestic vehicle OEMs. Fast demolding performance in cold-mold molding, suitable for automated production lines.
· Disadvantages: Pricing is the highest among the five manufacturers for equivalent specifications; low priority for small-batch orders below 5 tons; general soft foam grades offer weaker cost performance than Bluestar.
Core Grades: 330NG, POP3628 (High Resilience + Graft POP Supporting)
· Advantages: Mature long-standing process with excellent formulation tolerance (wide foaming compatibility) and strong additive adaptability with balanced cost performance; stable raw material traceability and sufficient bulk inventory with flexible small-order delivery; complete range of supporting POP grades.
· Disadvantages: Regular grades emit slightly stronger odor than Wanhua’s high-end series; limited customized ultra-high primary hydroxyl grades.
Core Grades: N330HR, N-POP40
· Advantages: Flexible modified polyether customization, outstanding cyclopentane system modification technology and superior high-solid POP performance; mature supporting products for cold chain and automotive rigid foams with pricing between Wanhua and Bluestar.
· Disadvantages: Fewer vehicle OEM certifications for high-end cold-curing soft foam grades; limited end-user application cases in Europe.
Core Grades: HR330, RPOP35
· Advantages: Deep expertise in soft furniture and high-end mattress foaming with superior foam hand feel adjustment and prominent slow-rebound modification technology; attentive customization services with adjustable trace small-molecule impurities.
· Disadvantages: Short product line of automotive cold-mold supporting grades; weaker mass supply capacity for large-volume vehicle OEM matching compared to Wanhua and Bluestar.
Core Grades: CH330, CH-POP45
· Advantages: Top-tier domestic graft POP technology with excellent load-bearing performance of high-solid POP and outstanding cost performance for sofas and large-block foams.
· Disadvantages: General base high-resilience polyethers exhibit average stability in enclosed automotive cold-mold scenarios with limited OEM certifications.
Combining the customer’s German automotive cold-mold foaming line, EU environmental standards, annual 220-ton bulk procurement demand and core priorities of stability and cost control, INOV, Hongbaoli and Changhua were eliminated (their products are more suitable for furniture/general foams with insufficient complete vehicle supporting cases). Two mid-to-high-end brands (Wanhua Chemical and Bluestar Dongda) with a total of 3 grades were selected as a combination of mass production primary materials and backup alternatives:
1. F3128 (Primary Grade): Direct substitute for original BASF 330N with 76% primary hydroxyl groups and 0.033% moisture, perfectly compatible with the customer’s automated cold-mold foaming line. Foam resilience reaches 64% with VOC compliance with EU ELV standards, designated as the primary raw material for full-year bulk procurement.
2. F3135 (High-Temperature Working Condition Backup): Upgraded modified grade with superior high-temperature aging resistance, reserved for summer high-temperature workshop production and high-end customized BMW interior orders.
330NG (Cost Reduction Alternative): Excellent foaming tolerance; minor formula adjustment of 0.5% catalyst delivers foaming performance comparable to Wanhua grades with finished products meeting all OEM standards. Deployed as a supplementary material when Wanhua supply is tight or prices rise to balance procurement costs.
Selection Logic: Wanhua delivers premium stable supply for high-standard Mercedes-Benz and BMW orders; Bluestar serves as a cost buffer backup to secure supply chain safety and avoid single-brand stockout risks.
1. Small Sample Stage: HiSiaddi coordinated free sample delivery of the 3 grades from both manufacturers, alongside English COAs, REACH registration documents and SVHC test reports. Laboratory foaming testing conducted by the German customer yielded foam resilience of 63.5% for F3128 and 62.3% for 330NG, with all three products meeting internal control indicators and full VOC compliance.
2. Small-Batch Trial Order: A 12-ton initial trial order (9 tons Wanhua F3128 + 3 tons Bluestar 330NG) was shipped from Qingdao Port to Hamburg. Seven consecutive days of mass production on the customer’s lines yielded no abnormalities, and seat foam successfully passed third-party incoming testing at BMW.
3. Annual Long-Term Agreement Execution: After trial production validation, Autopur signed a 220-ton annual procurement long-term agreement with HiSiaddi: 75% of annual orders adopt Wanhua F3128, 15% of high-end special orders use F3135, and the remaining 10% utilize Bluestar 330NG for cost control. Localized comprehensive procurement costs dropped by 27% compared to original BASF materials, and sea transportation delivery cycles were shortened to 30 days.
1. Industry Pain Points: Domestic polyether manufacturers operate with marketing-oriented sales strategies that only promote their own products and avoid competitor advantages. Overseas mid-to-high-end vehicle OEM customers lack industry information on domestic raw materials and risk misselecting grades leading to mass production losses when contacting manufacturers independently.
2. Mid-to-High-End Customer Demands: Raw materials must first meet OEM environmental and performance certifications, with dual-brand backup supply chains to avoid stockout risks. Customers pursue reasonable cost control under the premise of qualified product performance and reject bundled procurement from a single manufacturer.
