    Case 1: Localized Sourcing Project of Custom Modified PLA Pellets for a Premium French Food Group

    HiSiaddi overcame three major challenges including formula modification, process commissioning and export compliance, and successfully localized the procurement of three customized material grades.

    I. Client Profile

    The cooperating client, EcoSave SAS, is located in a high-end food industrial park in Lyon, France. It is a leading mid-to-high-end operator of pre-cooked meals and organic chilled food brands in Western Europe. Its products are sold at premium supermarkets including Auchan and Marks & Spencer. The company’s three core product lines are instant heatable food containers, high-barrier fresh-keeping films, and biodegradable coffee capsule shells, all positioned in the eco-friendly organic sector. Its full product range complies with EU regulatory standards including EU 10/2011 for food contact materials, EN 13432 for industrial compostability, REACH & SVHC, and full-chain SCIP compliance. The company maintains a stable annual PLA raw material procurement volume of 350 tons.

    Prior to the project, the client sourced modified PLA pellets exclusively from overseas manufacturers including NatureWorks (USA) and TotalEnergies Corbion.     Custom Standards for Three Grades

    1. Grade A – Heat-resistant injection molding PLA for instant meal containers: Designed for short-term microwave heating at 85°C; heat distortion temperature ≥ 88°C, elongation at break ≥ 18% (to mitigate brittleness of standard PLA). All components comply with EU 10/2011 food contact regulations; no small molecule migration or precipitation after grease immersion; finished products withstand drop tests without cracking, and fully biodegrade within 180 days under industrial composting conditions.

    2. Grade B – High-barrier film blowing PLA for fresh food: Film thickness 25μm; oxygen transmission rate ≤ 350 cm³/(m²·24h·atm); no cracking after bending at -20°C cold storage. Compatible with fully automatic high-speed film blowers with stable melt strength to avoid film rupture; blocks grease and water vapor penetration for long-term cold meat preservation packaging.

    3. Grade C – High-purity low-precipitation PLA for coffee capsules: High crystallinity with minimal residues; oligomer content < 80 ppm; no harmful substance precipitation after hot water extraction at 92°C. No bubbles form during high-pressure capsule injection molding, suitable for high-temperature high-pressure extraction in espresso machines. All raw materials and additives are listed on EU food-approved inventories.

    Four Common Deficiencies of Domestic Manufacturer Samples

    1. Rough substrate selection: Factories uniformly adopted low-molecular-weight homopolymer PLA general resins without distinguishing dedicated substrates for injection molding, film blowing, or high-purity applications. Standard PLA softens at only 60°C, failing to meet microwave heat resistance requirements, while insufficient low-temperature toughness caused cracking of films and capsules.

    2. Generic unoptimized modification formulas: Manufacturers relied on cheap universal plasticizers and fillers available on the market instead of food-grade bio-based modifiers. Auxiliary agent migration exceeded EU food contact limits after grease exposure. Only simple PBAT blending was used for toughening without rheological ratio optimization, resulting in unstable melt flow and frequent film rupture during film blowing.

    3. No targeted adjustments to pelletizing processes: General PLA production parameters were retained for twin-screw extrusion temperature, screw length-diameter ratio, and vacuum devolatilization settings. Insufficient volatile removal for high-purity capsule grades led to internal bubbles during high-temperature injection molding; agglomeration of nano-fillers in barrier grades caused crystal spots and pinholes in films.

    4. No supporting guidance for end-user processing: Domestic manufacturers only provided physical property reports without supplying equipment parameter guidance for film blowing and injection molding tailored to the French client’s production lines. The client continued using processing parameters developed for imported materials, and mismatched crystallization rates and fluidity of domestic PLA exacerbated defective finished products.

The heat distortion temperature rose from the original 62°C to 90°C, while elongation at break increased from 2% (virgin PLA) to 21%, resolving high-temperature softening and low-temperature brittleness defects.

    2. Grade B High-barrier Film Blowing PLA: Food-grade nano-silica and chitosan bio-barrier additives were incorporated into the PLA/PBAT blend system, pre-treated with silane coupling agents to prevent filler agglomeration. Post-optimization oxygen barrier performance improved by 42%, enabling stable production of 25μm ultra-thin films on high-speed equipment without pinholes or rupture.
