    Case Overview: French High-End Beauty Raw Material Group LUMI Faces Roadblocks in Custom Special Polymethylsilsesquioxane (PMSQ) Procurement; HiSiaddi Leverages Domestic Silicon Enterprise R&D Resources to Deliver Refined Customization Solution and Secures a 178-ton Annual Long-Term Custom Raw Material Supply Contract

    I. Client Profile (European Mid-to-High-End End Manufacturer with Independent Color Cosmetic Brands & Raw Material R&D Center, Not a Trading Intermediary)

    Headquartered in a fine chemical industrial park in Seine Department on the outskirts of Paris, France, LUMI Group is a top European manufacturer of light luxury color cosmetics and skincare products with self-owned raw material R&D and production capabilities. It has specialized in high-end color cosmetic powder formulations for 28 years. Its three local light luxury color cosmetic and skincare brands are all available at Galeries Lafayette Paris and Sephora retail outlets across Europe. All product formulations comply with EU CosIng cosmetic raw material regulations, REACH and EC1223 cosmetic safety standards. Raw materials must pass full testing including SGS toxicology, skin irritation and microbial tests conducted by French local authorities. Its three flagship product lines are matte foundation, long-wearing loose powder and high-SPF sunscreen. Polymethylsilsesquioxane serves as the core oil-controlling and soft-focus powder raw material in its color cosmetic formulations. Previously, the group exclusively purchased customized PMSQ powder from overseas manufacturers including Wacker (Germany) and Kobo (USA).

    Due to capacity cuts by major European and American organosilicon manufacturers, extended customization lead times up to 90 days and a 41% surge in import raw material prices, LUMI launched a localization substitution project for Chinese customized raw materials. The group has an annual total demand of 178 tons split into four batches covering three differentiated customized grades of polymethylsilsesquioxane powder. The customized specifications of the three grades fully differ from standard industrial spot products available domestically:

    1. Grade for matte foundation: D50 particle size 1.2μm±0.1μm, oil absorption value 210–225g/100g, hydroxyl residue <180ppm;

    2. Grade for oil-controlling loose powder: porous hollow microsphere structure, bulk density 0.28g/cm³, soft-focus refractive index 1.425;

    3. Grade for sunscreen systems: low-surface-activation modified variant, compatible with octyl methoxycinnamate without phase separation, no yellowing at high temperature of 125℃.

    The client previously contacted 3 regular domestic organosilicon manufacturers independently, yet domestic production lines mainly produce standard national standard polymethylsilsesquioxane. Existing hydrolysis polycondensation and spray drying lines cannot simultaneously realize three customized processes: precise particle size control molding, hollow porous granulation and surface methyl modification. Factories can only produce generic powder circulating in the market, with a minimum particle size adjustment error of ±0.8μm, failing to meet the precise formula parameters required by LUMI. Five consecutive sample deliveries sent to French laboratories all failed formulation compatibility tests, halting R&D work and risking delays to the scheduled launch of new color cosmetic products. LUMI terminated direct cooperation with domestic manufacturers and fully entrusted HiSiaddi to oversee the full-process customized development, pilot trial sample preparation and mass production delivery as a foreign trade coordinator.

    II. Three Core Challenges in Delivering Customized Products for the Client

    Challenge 1: Difficulties in Precise Particle Size Customization; Excessively Broad Particle Size Distribution from Conventional Mass Production Processes

    Domestically mass-produced polymethylsilsesquioxane is generally manufactured via traditional water glass hydrolysis + rake drying processes, resulting in finished particle sizes ranging from 3μm to 12μm with a particle size distribution PDI>1.8, making it impossible to produce narrow-distribution microspheres of 1.2μm. The client’s foundation formula relies on precise particle sizes to achieve soft-focus pore-blurring effects; particle size fluctuations exceeding 0.2μm will lead to foundation balling and uneven coverage on skin. Conventional domestic production lines lack segmented temperature-controlled hydrolysis equipment to lock particle sizes at the molecular level.

    Challenge 2: No Mature Mass Production Process for Hollow Porous Microsphere Structures

    Hollow PMSQ required for loose powder relies on a special stepwise sol-gel granulation process. Conventional solid-phase polycondensation can only produce solid spherical powder with insufficient oil absorption capacity to meet the long-lasting oil control requirements of loose powder. Most domestic silicon enterprises only produce generic solid materials and lack closed low-temperature in-situ granulation pilot lines; small-batch trial formulas cannot be directly scaled up for mass production.

    Challenge 3: No Mature Customization Scheme for Surface Modification of Sunscreen-Specific Powder

    Sunscreen raw materials require additional short-chain methyl end-capping modification on powder surfaces to reduce powder polarity and avoid phase separation and precipitation when mixed with oily sunscreen agents. Generic domestic off-the-shelf PMSQ is unmodified with high surface hydroxyl groups; when compounded with oily sunscreen additives and left standing for 72 hours, phase separation occurs, failing to meet EU stability standards for sunscreen formulations. Manufacturers lack supporting post-processing modification procedures.

    III. HiSiaddi Delivers Customized Solutions in Phases, Connecting the Full Chain of Small Trials – Pilot Trials – Mass Production

    Leveraging R&D resources from leading domestic organosilicon manufacturers (Xinyaqiang Silicon Chemistry, Anhui Silicon Technology), HiSiaddi set up a special project team consisting of foreign trade specialists, silicon material R&D engineers and third-party cosmetic testing specialists. The team split process development according to the client’s three customized specifications and completed customized development in four cycles.

    Phase 1: Parameter Disassembly & Small-Trial Formula Finalization (22 Days)

    1. HiSiaddi sorted out LUMI’s full set of French-version formulation standards and EU raw material testing limits, converted indicators including particle size, oil absorption value, refractive index and hydroxyl content into domestic chemical production process parameters, and coordinated with cooperative manufacturer laboratories to replace traditional water glass raw materials with methyltrimethoxysilane monomers and ethanol-water composite solvent low-temperature stepwise hydrolysis processes, precisely controlling microsphere forming dimensions by regulating hydrolysis rates from the source.

    2. Foundation-grade product: Adopt segmented temperature control (22℃ pre-hydrolysis in the first stage, 45℃ polycondensation in the second stage) with gradient catalyst addition. Small-trial samples achieve stable D50 of 1.18–1.25μm, PDI controlled below 1.12 and measured hydroxyl content of 152ppm, meeting the client’s upper limit requirement of <180ppm.

    3. Hollow microsphere loose powder grade: Adopt template-based in-situ granulation to generate hollow cavity structures via low-temperature closed reactions. Small-trial bulk density reaches 0.276g/cm³ with oil absorption value of 228g/100g, satisfying long-lasting oil control parameters.

    4. Modified sunscreen grade: Add a gas-phase methyl end-capping modification procedure at the post-production stage to passivate residual silanol groups on powder surfaces. Modified powder mixed with the client’s original sunscreen oil base shows no phase separation after standing at room temperature for 90 days and no yellowing after 8 hours in a 130℃ oven.

    Three batches of small-trial samples were packed in sterile aluminum foil packaging and airfreighted to LUMI’s R&D laboratory in France. Full testing conducted by French SGS in accordance with EU CosIng standards confirmed all items including skin irritation, heavy metals, microorganisms and formulation compatibility passed. The client issued a formal formulation finalization confirmation document.

    Phase 2: Pilot Line Technical Renovation to Adapt to Customized Mass Production (35 Days)

    Coordinate manufacturers to partially renovate a 500L pilot reactor and closed spray drying equipment: replace precision temperature control modules, closed solvent recovery systems and classified air flow screening devices. Abandon traditional high-temperature rake drying (which causes uneven material heating, agglomeration and particle size deviation) and adopt low-temperature closed spray drying to prevent powder oxidation and yellowing under high temperatures. Three batches of 50kg pilot mass production were completed, with deviations of all finished product indicators from small-trial samples below 3%, meeting batch stability requirements.

    Phase 3: Small-Batch Trial Production & Delivery to Verify Cross-Border Application Conditions

    The first trial order of 32 tons (13 tons for foundation, 11 tons for loose powder, 8 tons for sunscreen) was produced separately under three independent grades and packed individually. HiSiaddi prepared tri-lingual (Chinese, English, French) COA, REACH-SDS and safety technical documents complying with EU cosmetic raw material standards. The full shipment was shipped from Shanghai Port to Le Havre Port. The client carried out mass production of three new color cosmetic products with the raw materials: the foundation delivered a smooth finish without uneven coverage, the loose powder provided over 8 hours of oil control and long wear, and the sunscreen lotion maintained stable homogeneity during long-term storage without separation. The three new products successfully passed French cosmetic registration and launched on European retail outlets as scheduled.

    Phase 4: Mass Production Process Solidification & Secured Full-Year Batch Delivery

    Solidify the complete customized production SOP based on trial production data. Manufacturers reserve a dedicated flexible customized production line to prioritize LUMI’s order scheduling. The remaining 146 tons were shipped in three batches monthly in line with the client’s quarterly new product launch schedule, achieving 100% on-time delivery of the full 178-ton annual customized polymethylsilsesquioxane order.

    IV. Project Benefits & Long-Term Cooperation Expansion

    1. Client Cost Optimization: The comprehensive purchasing unit price of customized domestic PMSQ dropped by 39.5% compared with original Wacker products; international lead times were shortened from 90 days to 38 days. The client’s comprehensive raw material production cost for color cosmetics decreased by 22.7%, significantly boosting gross profit margins of new products.

    2. Deepened Order Expansion: In the following year, LUMI renewed a 232-ton annual long-term contract for upgraded customized PMSQ. Meanwhile, the group fully entrusted HiSiaddi with exclusive responsibility for China-based customized procurement and formulation implementation of all series of color cosmetic raw materials including organosilicon elastomers, silicone oils and silicon powder. Supported by stable customization capabilities, LUMI also assisted HiSiaddi in connecting customized procurement demands from two additional high-end French beauty groups.

    V. Project Review & Summary

    1. Industry Customization Pain Points: Most domestic polymethylsilsesquioxane manufacturers focus on mass production of generic spot goods, with production lines and formulas designed for standard national standard mass-market products. They lack refined customized R&D and flexible pilot production lines, and can only produce standardized products that fail to meet differentiated formulation customization demands of mid-to-high-end European and American beauty clients. Overseas high-end end manufacturers are unfamiliar with domestic factory R&D resources; independent communication often leads to repeated unqualified samples and delayed R&D timelines.

    2. HiSiaddi’s Core Customization Value: As a foreign trade service provider, HiSiaddi bridges the full industrial chain spanning overseas client formulation demands, domestic R&D laboratories and modified mass production manufacturers. It translates overseas refined indicators into implementable production processes, filling the information gap between manufacturers lacking formulation R&D capabilities and clients lacking domestic supply chain resources. Delivering exclusive customized products at the process level is the key factor securing large annual long-term supply contracts.

    3. Procurement Logic of High-End Clients: Mid-to-high-end European and American beauty end manufacturers prioritize customized indicator matching, batch stability and compliance safety, with price as a secondary consideration. The ability to deliver exclusive formulation customization solutions is the core demand driving clients to adopt localized procurement from China.
