Case: Custom-Grade Polysorbate 80 Rollout Project for L’Origine, a Premium Organic Skincare Group Based in Switzerland

    I. Project Background & Client Customization Pain Points

L’Origine, a leading mid-to-high-end organic skincare enterprise headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, specializes in salon organic serums, maternity & infant repair lotions, and luxury aromatherapy toners. Its full product line is sold at high-end organic supermarkets under Coop (Switzerland), organic pharmacies of dm (Germany), and premium SPA venues in Paris, France. The brand complies with EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223, COSMOS Natural Organic Certification, REACH, IFRA, and local Swiss beauty safety standards. For years, all emulsifying raw materials were sourced from Croda Super Refined Polysorbate 80 (Tween 80) imported from the UK.

Driven by surging local European raw material prices, extended lead times of up to 90 days for Croda’s exclusive customized grades, and a minimum order quantity threshold of 30 tons, the client initiated localized Chinese alternative sourcing. Its annual demand stands at 125 tons, with an initial trial order of 18 tons of high-purity customized Polysorbate 80. Standard domestic off-the-shelf products failed to meet the client’s rigid customized specifications, and three regular domestic Tween manufacturers contacted independently all failed to resolve three core customization challenges:

    1. Non-standard customized physicochemical indicators The client’s formulation features transparent high-activity serum systems, requiring European imported high-purity refined oleic acid with oleic acid content ≥99.2%. The molar addition of ethylene oxide (EO) must be precisely controlled at 20.2±0.2 mol, whereas mass-produced generic domestic variants have an EO addition fluctuation of ±1 mol—this directly causes turbidity after cold storage and precipitation/layering of active Vitamin C in serums. Additional rigid limits: Acid value ≤0.8 mgKOH/g (national standard generic grade ≤2.0), peroxide value ≤2.0 meq/kg (national standard generic grade ≤5.0), Gardner color ≤2 (national standard generic grade ≤6). All mass-produced standard products exceed these limits.

    2. Extreme control over impurity content for customized standards Targeting its organic maternity & infant product line, the brand mandates dioxane ≤3 ppm and residual ethylene oxide (EO) ≤0.5 ppm (EU general cosmetic limits: 10 ppm and 1 ppm respectively), with single heavy metal contents (Pb/As/Cd) <0.1 ppm and zero residual catalysts or aldehyde impurities. Generic domestic Polysorbate 80 typically contains 5–12 ppm dioxane, failing the raw material warehousing audit standard of COSMOS and disqualifying finished organic product filing.

    3. Customized application performance & compliance requirements A precise HLB value of 15.0±0.1 is required. When compounded with the client’s proprietary plant essential oils, the mixture must remain stable without layering after 60 days of cycling between room temperature, 45°C high temperature, and -5°C low temperature. Supporting documents including bilingual English-French COAs, EU CLP-SDS, REACH documentation, and COSMOS raw material traceability reports are also mandatory. Conventional manufacturers can only provide simple domestic quality inspection certificates and lack the capacity to compile EU compliance files.

Most domestic manufacturers only produce standard national-spec mass-produced goods with fixed continuous production lines, refusing to adjust processes for small-batch customization or switch raw material sources due to cost concerns. The client’s R&D team tested six off-the-shelf samples, all resulting in failed formulations. The brand therefore entrusted HiSiaddi with full end-to-end customized development covering raw material selection, process customization, lab and pilot trials, mass production quality control, and compliance documentation support.

II. Full-Chain Customization Service Rollout by HiSiaddi

HiSiaddi assembled a dedicated task force consisting of cosmetic emulsifier technical engineers, factory process coordinators, third-party testing specialists, and EU compliance officers, partnering with leading domestic Polysorbate 80 manufacturers capable of precision customization. The customized development was completed in four phases:

Phase 1: Lock upstream raw materials to customize specifications from the source

    1. In accordance with client requirements, we coordinated the factory to abandon ordinary industrial-grade domestic oleic acid and exclusively adopt Spanish refined pharmaceutical-grade oleic acid. GC purity testing was conducted upon raw material arrival to strictly guarantee oleic acid content ≥99.2%, eliminating free saturated fatty acids and plant colloid impurities. Pharmaceutical-grade high-purity crystalline sorbitol was selected instead of industrial liquid sorbitol to reduce by-product generation.

    2. Batches of ethylene oxide were pre-locked, with purity testing upon delivery and pre-calculation of feed ratios to stabilize EO addition molar weight at the feeding stage and eliminate fluctuations arising from bulk feeding in conventional production.

Phase 2: Production line technical transformation + lab-to-pilot trial iteration to optimize customized indicators

    1. We coordinated the factory to deploy a standalone 500L batch reactor (separated from the general mass production pipeline) for three rounds of lab trial formulation iteration:

    1. Round 1: Fine-tune feeding temperature and etherification reaction duration

    2. Round 2: Optimize esterification catalytic systems with low-residue eco-friendly catalysts to drastically reduce peroxide and acid values

    3. Round 3: Upgrade downstream molecular distillation refining via two-stage negative-pressure deep purification to strip dioxane, residual EO and other by-products

    2. Trial samples were shipped to the client’s R&D center in Switzerland for simultaneous stability testing under cold storage, essential oil solubilization testing, and accelerated aging compatibility testing with active ingredients. Four rounds of sample iteration were completed, and the final sample fully met all non-standard physicochemical limits:

    1. Acid value: 0.56 mgKOH/g; Peroxide value: 1.32 meq/kg; Gardner color: 1.5

    2. Dioxane: 2.1 ppm; Residual EO: 0.32 ppm; All heavy metals <0.08 ppm

    3. Measured HLB: 14.98, falling perfectly within the 15.0±0.1 target range

    3. A 500kg pilot finalized sample was produced for full-formulation mass trial by the client. The serum remained fully transparent after 60 days of thermal cycling between -5°C and 45°C with no Vitamin C precipitation, and its emulsification stability exceeded 98% of the original Croda imported reference material.

Phase 3: On-site quality control during mass production to ensure batch consistency

    1. During mass production of the initial 18-ton order, HiSiaddi deployed quality control personnel to oversee the full workflow of feeding, reaction, refining and filtration on-site. Samples were collected every 3 tons and sent to CNAS-certified laboratories to issue independent batch COAs, preventing indicator drift across production batches.

    2. Finished products were filled under nitrogen protection in light-proof packaging with food-grade epoxy-coated iron drums to avoid peroxide value elevation from oxidation during long-distance sea transportation to Europe.

Phase 4: Customized full set of EU compliance documents to meet organic certification requirements

    1. Compiled bilingual English-French SDS safety data sheets in line with EU CLP regulations, including GHS hazard labeling, sensitization warnings and storage & transportation specifications.

    2. Leveraged our partnered EU REACH Only Representative to complete substance dossiers and SVHC screening reports for this customized grade. We organized source traceability documents for upstream oleic acid and sorbitol, plus production process ledgers to issue COSMOS-recognized raw material traceability files, which can be directly used for the client’s annual organic product certification audit and EU CPNP notification.

III. Shipment Delivery & Long-Term Cooperation Outcomes

    1. On-time customs clearance & delivery: The 18 tons of customized Polysorbate 80 were cleared and shipped from Shanghai Port. All testing and compliance documents passed inspection at Hamburg Customs without detention or query. After raw material warehousing, the client fully replaced Croda imported material for mass production. Three serums and maternity & infant lotions were successfully launched at high-end organic supermarkets across Switzerland and Germany, with zero consumer complaints regarding layering, discoloration or skin irritation.

    2. Cost & lead time optimization: Localized customized procurement costs were 31% lower than original Croda imports, and standard lead times were shortened from 90 days (European supply) to 32 days (domestic supply), greatly improving the client’s inventory turnover.

    3. Annual long-term framework agreement: Following successful delivery of the trial order, the client signed a 125-ton annual framework procurement contract for customized Polysorbate 80 with HiSiaddi, with quarterly phased production batches. Later, the client’s subsidiaries in Spain and Italy launched new organic cleansing lines adopting the same customized specifications, with HiSiaddi continuing to coordinate customized production.

    IV. Project Summary

    1. Industry-wide pain point: Most domestic emulsifier manufacturers focus on mass-producing standard national-spec products with fixed continuous production lines. For cost reasons, they are unwilling to adjust raw materials or modify processes to deliver non-standard customization for high-end overseas clients. Mid-to-high-end overseas organic beauty brands are constrained by strict EU regulations, COSMOS organic certification and formulation stability requirements, making standard domestic raw materials incompatible with premium formulas and independent customized sourcing extremely difficult.

    2. Customization characteristics of mid-to-high-end clients: Acceptance criteria are not based on national standards; raw material parameters are reverse-customized around end-product formulations with stringent control over trace impurities, sensory indicators and compatibility performance. Compliance documentation and raw material traceability carry equal weight to product indicators. Brands prioritize finished product compliance and shelf safety over raw material pricing.

    3. Core value of HiSiaddi: Drawing on chemical R&D expertise and partnerships with top domestic manufacturers, we break rigid mass production models to deliver full-chain customized solutions covering raw material sourcing, process adjustment, deep purification, quality control and compliance documentation. We fill the client’s gap in localized customized raw material supply and complete import substitution of foreign raw materials.
