The buyer, Vignoble Royale, a royal wine group from France, is a mid-to-high-end premium wine producer based in Bordeaux. It mainly produces AOC dry red wine and sparkling wine, which are exclusively supplied to high-end local wine shops in France and star-rated hotels across Europe. The group complies with standards set by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), EU E334, FCC, LFGB and EU Organic regulations. It imports 130 tons of natural L(+)-tartaric acid annually for wine acid adjustment, wine liquid stabilization and preventing tartrate crystal precipitation under low temperature. The group previously purchased natural grape-derived tartaric acid from Italy year-round, but switched to customized production in China due to reduced European raw material output and skyrocketing shipping costs.
The client put forward three non-standard mandatory customization requirements, which cannot be met by conventional national standard tartaric acid available on the market:
1. Customized raw material source: Only natural L-tartaric acid biologically fermented from grape pomace is acceptable; synthetic products produced via maleic anhydride are rejected, to qualify for EU Clean Label certification.
2. Customized particle size and dissolution performance: Two particle specifications are required: ① Medium crystals of 20–30 mesh for slow-release acid adjustment in dry red wine; ② Ultrafine crystal powder of 120 mesh for instant acid adjustment in sparkling wine, fully soluble in cold water within 3 seconds without residues. Commercially available standard products have mixed particle sizes and cannot be directly fed into production lines.
3. Customized internal impurity control: Heavy metal, sulfate and residual organic acid limits are far stricter than national standards, with fixed control ranges: fumaric acid ≤ 0.015% and optical rotation of +13.8°~+14.2°. Mass-produced products from regular factories suffer large parameter fluctuations. Additional requirements include separate English COA per batch, batch-specific Kosher certificates, raw material traceability files and REACH-compliant SDS.
The client contacted 3 domestic tartaric acid manufacturers independently, yet all factories could only produce standard general specifications. Restricted by production line equipment and purification processes, none could simultaneously fulfill raw material traceability, separate production of two particle sizes and strict control of trace impurities. All 5 batches of trial samples failed testing. Faced with an approaching production deadline for new wine vintages, the wine group entrusted HiSiaddi to fully deliver the customized development project.
HiSiaddi partnered with leading domestic manufacturers of natural grape-derived tartaric acid, eliminating factories operating only synthetic general-purpose production lines. The customization process was split according to the client’s technical indicators:
1. Secure raw material supply from Xinjiang grape processing bases, fix grape pomace as the exclusive raw material source, and establish a full-chain traceability ledger covering grape harvesting, by-product pressing, extraction & fermentation and refined crystallization. Origin documents are attached to each batch to pass EU organic traceability audits.
2. Retrofit two graded crystallization production lines in the factory: The first line adopts temperature-controlled crystallization to produce 20–30 mesh particles; the second line performs recrystallization, crushing and screening to obtain 120 mesh ultrafine powder. Separate silo storage prevents cross-mixing of different particle sizes.
3. Add a secondary activated carbon impurity removal process and refined temperature-controlled crystallization to reduce sulfate and trace by-product organic acids to the client’s internal limits. Every batch undergoes full testing against the European Pharmacopoeia (EP) standard at a CNAS-accredited laboratory.
1. First round of small samples: 5kg samples of each particle size were sent to the French wine group’s R&D center for small-batch brewing trials of dry red and sparkling wine. Feedback indicated the ultrafine powder slightly suppressed fruit aroma after dissolution. HiSiaddi coordinated fine-tuning of the crystallization dehydration process to lower residual sugar before resubmitting revised samples.
2. Second round of samples passed all physical, chemical and brewing performance tests. The acid adjustment rate and anti-crystallization effect during low-temperature wine storage outperformed the original Italian imported raw material.
1. Customized packaging: 25kg food-grade kraft paper bags with inner film liners. Outer packaging printed with bilingual French-English labels including E334 code, raw material properties, particle size specification, batch number and country of origin, complying with EU food contact packaging regulations.
2. Customized documentation: Bilingual French-English COA, LFGB test reports, free sales certificates, English SDS compliant with 16 REACH provisions, batch-specific Kosher secondary certificates and complete grape raw material traceability documents are issued batch by batch to satisfy customs clearance and food safety warehousing audits in France.
1. First customized order of 65 tons: 37 tons of 20–30 mesh crystals (for dry red wine series) + 28 tons of 120 mesh ultrafine powder (for sparkling wine), split into 4 production batches.
2. Goods arrived at the Port of Marseille. Full customized documentation enabled one-stop customs clearance without inspection or port detention. Raw materials were smoothly put into operation on the wine group’s two brewing lines, supporting stable mass production of new vintage wines that year.
3. After successful delivery of the first order, an annual framework order of 132 tons of customized products was signed, with fixed long-term production schedules for the two customized specifications.
1. Mid-to-high-end French wine group: The customized domestically produced natural tartaric acid cut procurement costs by 28% compared with Italian imports. The tailor-made particle sizes perfectly matched automated feeding lines and eliminated manual screening procedures. Wine body stability was improved, and a supplementary customized purchase order of 46 tons was placed by the group’s new Spanish subsidiary winery later.
2. Domestic manufacturing factory: Supported by this high-end European customized order, the factory upgraded its refined graded crystallization production line and formed standardized production of wine-specific customized specifications. It subsequently secured fixed customized supply contracts with three premium wineries in Spain and Portugal.
3. HiSiaddi foreign trade service provider: Leveraging one-stop customized services covering process R&D, raw material traceability control, particle size customization and compliant documentation, HiSiaddi deepened its presence in the segmented market of high-end European brewing organic acids and built differentiated competitive advantages in customization services.
Most domestic tartaric acid manufacturers focus on mass production of general specifications, with production equipment and quality control systems oriented toward national standard bulk goods. They are reluctant to retrofit production lines for small-batch high-end customization. Restricted by brewing techniques and EU label regulations, mid-to-high-end overseas wineries impose non-standard requirements on raw material sources, particle sizes and impurity limits. As a neutral foreign trade service provider, HiSiaddi connects full chains including upstream raw material traceability, factory production line technical transformation, sample formulation and export compliance, delivering exclusive customized products and filling the customization gap between domestic raw material manufacturers and high-end refined procurement demand from Europe.
