NutriCan, a high-end food group headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, specializes in cold-pressed nut oils, baked nuts, and organic puffed snacks. Its products are sold in premium Canadian organic supermarkets and North American chain health pharmacies, fully complying with U.S. FDA 21CFR, FCC, Canadian CFIA food regulations, as well as KOSHER and HALAL certifications. The group has an annual demand of 43 tons of food-grade refined antioxidant TBHQ, which it previously sourced long-term from U.S. manufacturers.
In recent years, domestic chemical raw material prices in North America have surged, major manufacturers face tight production schedules, and delivery lead times have extended to over 50 days. Against this backdrop, the client launched a localization substitution project for customized TBHQ made in China.
The client independently contacted three conventional domestic TBHQ manufacturers at first. Mass-produced standard domestic products only meet national general specifications, and manufacturers operate fixed synthesis and refining processes, refusing to carry out separate technical renovations tailored to the client’s formulas. Small-scale trials using standard TBHQ samples revealed consistent defects:
1. Trace residual tert-butanol and heavy metal levels in standard products exceed limits, failing the clean label control requirements for organic food;
2. Crystalline particles of inconsistent thickness lead to tiny suspended solids that remain undissolved in low-temperature nut oils;
3. The client requires low-dust granular products packed in 25kg inner aluminum foil nitrogen-sealed bags, while standard PE woven bags supplied by existing factories are prone to moisture absorption and oxidation. Manufacturers declined to renovate crystallization workshops and filling production lines separately.
Sample losses incurred in preliminary trials amounted to 6,400 Canadian Dollars, putting the new product launch plan on hold. Upon the recommendation of the Canada-China Food Raw Materials Chamber of Commerce, the client fully entrusted HiSiaddi with end-to-end customized services including index decomposition, factory screening, synthesis and refining process optimization, crystal modification, customized packaging, and sample follow-up.
The client set rigid customized technical indicators stricter than China’s national standard GB2760:
1. TBHQ main content ≥99.90% (national standard general products only require ≥99.0%);
2. Residual tert-butanol ≤0.005%, hydroquinone monomer residue ≤0.003%, lead <1.5ppm, arsenic <0.3ppm, meeting the access limits for organic food additives in Canada;
3. Spherical granulation process to produce 80–100 mesh low-dust particles, which dissolve completely in nut oil at room temperature without precipitation under 4°C cold storage;
4. Packaging: 25kg food-grade aluminum foil vacuum nitrogen-sealed plastic drums with fully English compliance labels. Each batch shall be accompanied by English COA recognized by FCC and CFIA as well as third-party test reports.
HiSiaddi eliminated small and medium chemical plants that only mass-produce standard national-standard TBHQ without flexible technical renovation capacity, and shortlisted two leading domestic TBHQ manufacturers equipped with continuous synthesis lines and multi-stage vacuum rectification production lines certified under FSSC22000. A fine chemical enterprise in Shandong was finalized as the designated production plant. HiSiaddi coordinated the factory to allocate independent dedicated production lines for synthesis, crystallization and filling, with separate raw material warehousing control to avoid index fluctuations caused by cross-contamination of raw materials across batches.
1. High-purity hydroquinone and refined tert-butanol are adopted as raw materials to reduce impurity generation at the source;
2. Optimize the alkylation catalytic system and reaction endpoint control, extend negative pressure rectification duration, and add two-stage thin-film desolventizing processes to thoroughly remove residual tert-butanol and unreacted monomers, keeping by-product indicators within the client’s specified limits;
3. Adjust the cooling curve and stirring speed of crystallization kettles, abandon the traditional acicular crystallization process, and adopt melt spray granulation to generate uniform spherical particles. This delivers low dust and rapid dissolution in oils, resolving the pain point of poor solubility and precipitation of original acicular crystals.
The factory’s original standard products adopt PE-lined woven bags without aluminum foil nitrogen-filled filling equipment. HiSiaddi assisted the factory in adding a small sealed filling line: customized 25kg food-grade aluminum foil inner liners paired with food plastic drums. After filling, the drums are vacuum-replaced with high-purity nitrogen and sealed to isolate air and prevent discoloration and oxidation of TBHQ during storage and transportation. Drum bodies are printed with English product name TBHQ, CAS No. 1948-33-0, FDA compliance number, storage conditions, allergen prompts, production filing information in accordance with North American regulations.
Cooperate with CNAS and North America-recognized third-party testing laboratories to customize full testing items based on dual standards of FCC and Canadian CFIA. Bilingual COA quality inspection certificates are issued for each batch, supplemented by accelerated antioxidant test data and organic product compliance statements. HiSiaddi assisted the factory in completing full sets of certificates including FDA GRAS filing, KOSHER and HALAL to meet the import customs clearance and organic supermarket warehousing filing requirements in Canada. Products were shipped to Canada in three batches for re-testing: small samples → 50kg pilot batch → 500kg mass trial batch via air freight.
The R&D center in Canada conducted industrial full-working-condition pilot tests for 6 consecutive days. For various cold-pressed walnut oil and macadamia nut oil, the peroxide value after 12 months of storage at room temperature was far lower than that of the original U.S.-imported raw materials, with clear oil free of solid precipitation. Baked nuts produced at high temperature showed no peculiar odors and significantly extended shelf life. All product indicators passed on-site inspection by Canadian CFIA upon entry.
The client formally signed an annual framework procurement contract for 43 tons of TBHQ to be scheduled for production in 9 monthly batches. The comprehensive unit price of domestically customized TBHQ decreased by 30.1% compared with the original U.S.-imported raw materials, cutting annual raw material procurement costs by 91,000 Canadian Dollars. In the following year, the group launched an organic sunflower oil product line and placed an additional customized TBHQ order of 7.1 tons, entrusting HiSiaddi with overall coordination for all antioxidant raw material procurement of the group.

NutriCan, the mid-to-high-end food group in Canada, successfully completed high-quality localization substitution of raw materials, escaping supply chain challenges including surging North American raw material prices and delayed delivery schedules. New organic products were launched in premium Canadian supermarkets on schedule, avoiding economic losses from scrapped samples in the early stage.
2. The designated domestic TBHQ manufacturer solidified standardized production processes for low-impurity spherical granulated TBHQ relying on this benchmark North American project. Customized products command a 36% premium over standard national-standard TBHQ.
