    Case of Domestic Citronellol Formulation Technical Rectification for SuisAroma, a Mid-to-High-End Luxury Beauty Brand from Switzerland

    SuisAroma is a well-established mid-to-high-end beauty enterprise based in the Alps region of Switzerland, specializing in salon luxury care essences, organic mosquito repellent body lotions and salon rose perfumes. Its products are sold at Swiss chain drugstores and high-end beauty counters in Geneva, fully complying with EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223, IFRA Edition 50, COSMOS Natural Organic Certification and Switzerland’s local cosmetic safety assessment standard CPSR. The brand previously purchased refined L-citronellol from Takasago Japan year-round. Driven by surging overseas raw material prices and extended delivery cycles, the client selected domestically produced cosmetic-grade citronellol for bulk procurement. After replacing imported raw materials for mass production, four major mass production technical failures emerged: perfume aroma deviation, delamination & discoloration of weak acid essence during storage, emulsification coagulation of mosquito repellent lotion under high temperature and excessive allergen detection in finished products.

    The raw material manufacturer only guaranteed compliance with national standard physical and chemical indicators, lacking R&D capacity for terminal daily chemical formulations and unable to resolve implementation issues from raw material modification, formulation process and workshop operation dimensions. 4.5 tons of semi-finished products in stock faced scrapping, and new product launch was postponed. The client entrusted HiSiaddi to coordinate full-chain technical diagnosis and optimization implementation. After all issues were fully resolved, an annual fixed procurement long-term order of 82 tons was signed.

    I. Four Major Mass Production Technical Failures After Switching to Domestic Citronellol

    The client retained the original feeding ratio, heating emulsification and flavor blending processes designed for Japanese imported raw materials to produce with domestic racemic citronellol. The domestic product had much lower control standards for chiral components, peroxides and trace terpene impurities than imported refined grades, triggering multiple production failures:

    1. Aroma deterioration of salon rose perfume: Original imported L-citronellol contained ≥98% L-isomer with soft and mellow floral notes; domestic racemic citronellol only contained 63% L-isomer, with abundant D-isomers introducing sharp green fishy odors. At identical addition ratios, the main rose aroma was covered by off-notes, resulting in pungent top notes and thin middle notes, making dozens of batches of perfume unfit for filling and launch.

    2. Delamination & yellowing of weak acid repair essence during storage: The essence adopted a weak acid system with pH 4.4~5.2. The peroxide content of domestic citronellol reached 5.8mmol/L, far exceeding the client’s internal control limit of ≤1.8mmol/L. The raw material continuously oxidized to generate organic acids during storage for 35 days, breaking the balance of emulsified systems and causing oil-water separation and yellowing of cream, failing the EU 12-month shelf-life stability test.

    3. High-temperature emulsification coagulation of organic mosquito repellent lotion: Production adopted 72℃ oil-water co-melting feeding. Unseparated high-boiling terpene impurities in the raw material triggered flocculation reaction with plant emollient oils under high temperature, causing flocculent coagulation of 1.8 tons of semi-finished products in the reactor in a single batch.

    4. Excessive allergens in finished products blocking shelf access: Trace limonene and citronellene residues in raw materials exceeded the allergen limits for EU leave-on skincare products, leading to failed CPSR safety assessment of finished goods and a ban on warehouse entry at Swiss supermarkets. The raw material manufacturer refused to invest in technical transformation by claiming compliance with China’s national flavor standard. The client’s losses from semi-finished product scrapping and delayed new product launch exceeded 93,000 Swiss Francs, prompting full authorization to HiSiaddi for technical diagnosis and rectification.

    II. HiSiaddi Resolved Technical Pain Points in Four Dimensions: Raw Material Modification, Formulation Fine-Tuning, Production Line Standardization & Incoming Material QC

    Equipped with full-time flavorists and cosmetic application formulation technicians, HiSiaddi coordinated with manufacturers to optimize raw material production processes while remotely cooperating with the client’s Swiss R&D center to adjust formulations and workshop operation standards, implementing rectification plans in four modules:

    Module 1: Upstream Raw Material Refining & Modification to Eliminate Inherent Defects

    1. Coordinate manufacturers to add secondary negative pressure precision rectification and low-temperature chiral separation sections to remove D-isomer impurities, stabilizing L-citronellol content at 98.2% and eliminating terpene impurities responsible for green fishy off-notes;

    2. Add nitrogen-sealed low-temperature deoxygenation section to control peroxide content down to 1.5mmol/L, deeply strip allergenic impurities including limonene and citronellene, and conduct full-item SGS testing per EU IFRA standards to ensure all allergen components stay below legal labeling thresholds;

    3. Pack finished products in light-proof nitrogen-filled stainless steel drums to isolate air oxidation, with each batch delivered with GC-MS chiral spectrum and special English COA test report for EU standards.

    Module 2: Refined Terminal Formulation Optimization for Three Product Lines to Preserve Original Aroma & System Stability

    1. Salon rose perfume: Reduce citronellol dosage from 0.42% to 0.32%, supplement floral notes with trace natural rose absolute; pre-dissolve citronellol in anhydrous ethanol under low temperature to make flavor mother liquor, mixed into perfume base at ambient temperature to avoid aroma loss from high temperature volatilization.

    2. Weak acid repair essence: Delay citronellol feeding from high-temperature emulsification stage to after cooling to 45℃, add trace food-grade VE antioxidant auxiliary to suppress oxidation and acidification of citronellol, stabilize weak acid emulsified structure and eliminate storage delamination & yellowing.

    3. Mosquito repellent body lotion: Pre-disperse citronellol in sweet almond oil at ambient temperature to avoid direct contact of impurities with high-temperature oils, slightly adjust emulsifier ratio simultaneously to eliminate high-temperature flocculation coagulation.

    Module 3: Revise Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for Full Production Lines of Client’s Swiss Factory

    1. Abolish the old high-temperature direct feeding process, unify the flavor pre-dissolved mother liquor feeding system across all production lines; HiSiaddi issued standardized German-English bilingual operation guidance documents;

    2. Warehouse management standard: Store modified citronellol in light-proof constant temperature warehouses at 18~22℃; finish raw material use within 72 hours after opening drums to avoid air exposure accelerating oxidation;

    3. Online video training for workshop operators and quality control staff to popularize knowledge of citronellol chirality, oxidation characteristics and acid-base compatibility taboos, unify feeding control standards across all production lines.

    Module 4: Assist Client in Establishing Exclusive Incoming Material Acceptance Internal Control Standards

    Add four customized acceptance indicators on top of national standards: L-citronellol content, maximum peroxide limit, 26 allergen impurity limits and 60℃ accelerated 90-day stability test. Subsequent batches of domestic citronellol must be delivered with corresponding item test reports; unqualified raw materials are rejected directly to avoid mass production risks from procurement source.

    III. Smooth Mass Production After Rectification & Confirmation of Long-Term Annual Procurement Order

    1. After raw material rectification and formulation optimization, lab and pilot trials all passed sensory fragrance evaluation and accelerated stability testing by the client’s Swiss R&D team. Remaining semi-finished products were reworked to qualified status via small-proportion formulation adjustment and put into mass production smoothly;

    2. HiSiaddi provided complete export documents: EU Version 9 SDS, IFRA compliance statement, COSMOS traceability documents and certificate of origin. The first batch of 14 tons modified citronellol was shipped from Shanghai to Zurich, Switzerland with seamless customs clearance;

    3. The client’s procurement cost for domestic raw materials dropped by 29% compared with Japanese imported supplies, and lead time was shortened from original 60 days to 32 days. An annual framework order of 82 tons was finalized, delivered in 5 separate batches on demand.

    IV. Project Summary

    1. Industry Pain Points: Most domestic flavor manufacturers produce goods complying only with national standards, merely controlling content indicators, lacking technical reserves for terminal daily chemical formulation applications and unfamiliar with EU cosmetic raw material control rules on impurities, chirality and oxidation. Direct raw material replacement by overseas mid-to-high-end skincare brands subject to strict regulations easily triggers mass production failures.

    2. Procurement Characteristics of Mid-to-High-End Clients: Formulation compatibility, batch stability and finished product compliance are top priorities, with procurement cost secondary. Raw material defects will lead to extremely high losses from semi-finished product scrapping and product removal from shelves, requiring suppliers to provide supporting technical implementation services.

    3. Core Value of HiSiaddi: Leverage flavor formulation application technology to bridge the gap between raw material technical transformation at manufacturers and terminal formulation implementation for overseas clients. We optimize raw material physical and chemical parameters while adjusting client production formulations and workshop processes in a targeted manner, providing one-stop solutions to technical barriers in domestic raw material substitution.
