Aroma Iberia is a leading mid-to-high-end flavor enterprise on the Iberian Peninsula, specializing in light luxury salon perfumes, organic maternal & infant body care and high-end aromatherapy essential oil raw materials. Its products are sold at high-end beauty chains in Madrid and Barcelona and EU organic supermarkets, complying with REACH, IFRA Edition 50, EU COSMOS Natural Certification and Spain’s CPSR cosmetic safety specifications. The group previously purchased imported L-citronellol from BASF year-round. Surging European raw material prices and extended lead times pushed the client to seek localized alternative procurement. However, the client was completely unfamiliar with mainstream domestic citronellol brands, grades and process routes. When contacting five major domestic manufacturers for quotations and samples, each factory only promoted its own product lines without objective analysis of competitors’ advantages and disadvantages. Five sample batches tested by the client all failed due to inconsistent aroma and poor formulation compatibility, stalling the model selection process. The client entrusted HiSiaddi to conduct neutral horizontal evaluation of mainstream domestic brands, screen 2 leading mid-to-high-end manufacturers and 3 matching grades, finally confirming bulk procurement with an annual framework order of 65 tons.
The client clarified two procurement lines based on product applications: ① Naturally extracted L-citronellol (for organic perfumes and aromatherapy essential oils, requiring natural traceability, low sensitization and prominent sweet rose aroma); ② Refined synthetic high-purity citronellol (for high-end body care fragrances, requiring strong batch stability and low impurities compatible with emulsified systems).
The client contacted five mainstream domestic citronellol manufacturers: Baihua (Guangzhou), Lvjing (Zhejiang), NHU, Guoguang (Jiangxi) and Aipu (Jiangsu):
1. Baihua (Guangzhou): Only promoted natural single-isolated citronellol, emphasizing natural extraction advantages while ignoring the stability strengths of synthetic grades and declining to comment on indicator characteristics of synthetic raw materials from the other four manufacturers;
2. Lvjing (Zhejiang): Focused on supercritical extraction natural-grade products, only introducing its own COSMOS certification advantages while avoiding elaboration on high purity and batch consistency strengths of NHU synthetic raw materials;
3. NHU (Zhejiang): Mainly promoted asymmetric hydrogenation synthetic high-purity citronellol, highlighting high purity, cost performance and stable mass production, without objectively explaining the natural aroma advantages of Baihua’s natural materials for flavor blending;
4. Guoguang (Jiangxi) & Aipu (Jiangsu): Each focused on its own superior grades, only providing self-produced test reports without horizontal comparison of competitors’ isomer, peroxide and allergen impurity parameters.
After purchasing five samples for testing, the client encountered frequent issues: some natural samples carried heavy green off-notes disrupting perfume top notes, while certain synthetic products delaminated in weak acid body care systems and failed formulation matching. Three weeks of sampling and nearly 5,000 EUR testing fees produced no qualified grade, and the brand’s new product launch date approached. Leveraging our flavor application engineer team, HiSiaddi collected original COA test reports, aroma data, compliance certificates and process routes of the five manufacturers, removing marketing bias to objectively analyze pros and cons by natural extraction / chemical synthetic categories:
· Advantages: Adopts imported Javanese citronella oil from Southeast Asia, traditional rectification single-isolation process with mellow natural aroma and rich rose undertones; full product line certified with FSSC22000 and COSMOS Natural, ideal for high-end natural perfume blending;
· Shortcomings: Natural raw materials are subject to seasonal fluctuations of citronella oil harvest, leading to minor batch aroma variations; L-isomer content ranges only 92%~96%, failing ultra-high chiral customization standards; unit price is relatively high;
· Main grades: BH-NAT95 Natural Citronellol, BH-NAT98 Refined Rose-Type Citronellol.
· Advantages: Low-temperature supercritical CO₂ extraction process with extremely low solvent residues and strict heavy metal control; all grades certified by EU organic standards with top-tier allergen impurity control, perfect for organic maternal & infant body care;
· Shortcomings: Limited production capacity leading to long lead times for bulk orders; high raw material costs with limited negotiation space for large-volume procurement;
· Main grade: LJ-CIT98 Organic Natural Citronellol.
· Advantages: Independent asymmetric hydrogenation synthetic process, large-scale mass production with highly consistent batch indicators; citronellol purity ≥99.2%, superior peroxide and trace aldehyde impurity control; complete REACH pre-registration, stable pricing and short lead time, suitable for industrial mass production of body care products;
· Shortcomings: Fully synthetic route without natural traceability certification, cannot be used for organic perfumes labeled "natural raw material"; regular aroma with weaker natural rose layered notes compared with natural extracted materials;
· Main grades: XHC-99 Refined Synthetic Citronellol, XHC-L97 Modified L-Synthetic Citronellol.
· Advantages: Direct sourcing from local citronella grass planting bases, cost-effective basic natural citronellol with obvious advantages for mass-market daily chemical bulk orders;
· Shortcomings: Insufficient chiral separation capacity for high-end refined grades with volatile isomer ratios; no high-end COSMOS organic certification, only suitable for mass-market daily chemical products, mismatching the client’s mid-to-high-end product standards.
· Advantages: Dual production lines for natural & synthetic citronellol with supporting flavor blending application services;
· Shortcomings: High minimum order quantity for high-end refined grades with limited flexibility for small-batch sampling; core products mainly supplied to large domestic daily chemical manufacturers, with few customized high-end export grades.
Combining the client’s dual production lines of organic perfume (natural) and high-end body care (synthetic), we eliminated Guoguang (Jiangxi) and Aipu (Jiangsu) whose product positioning failed to meet the client’s high-end standards, finally selecting Baihua (Guangzhou) for natural line and NHU (Zhejiang) for synthetic line with three matching finalized grades:
L-isomer content 95.5%±1%, refined via rectification of natural Javanese citronella oil, full sweet rose aroma without green fishy off-notes, with COSMOS natural certificate to support natural raw material labeling on perfumes, perfectly matching the client’s high-end perfume formulations.
Modified chiral synthesis with L-isomer content 97.1%, peroxide ≤1.5mmol/L, excellent stability in weak acid systems with zero risk of excessive allergen impurities, minimal batch fluctuation ideal for all emulsified body care formulations of the client.
99.3% purity with outstanding cost performance and clean aroma, applied to the client’s mid-tier fragrance product line to balance overall raw material procurement costs.
1. HiSiaddi coordinated sample delivery of 50g from each of the two manufacturers, simultaneously arranging third-party SGS testing for chirality, allergens and stability per EU standards. Sensory fragrance evaluation and accelerated stability testing conducted by the client’s Spanish R&D center confirmed all three grades passed formulation verification in one round;
