Full Customization Case of High-Purity Ectoin (Tetrahydromethylpyrimidine Carboxylic Acid) for a High-End Swiss Salon Skincare Group

    I. Basic Client Information

Purchaser: DermaSuis, a high-end salon skincare group headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. It operates medical beauty salons, dermatology clinics and premium drugstore counters across Europe, with three flagship product lines: post-procedure repair serums for medical aesthetics, sensitive skin medical repair creams and sun protection repair stock solutions. All its products have obtained EU CE cosmetic registration, and raw material access complies with EU Regulation EC1223 on Cosmetics, European Pharmacopoeia (EP), ECOCERT Natural Organic Certification, with strict control over animal-free sources and solvent residues. Previously, the group purchased pharmaceutical-grade Ectoin directly from German manufacturer Bitop, with an annual rigid demand of 75 tons of high-purity Ectoin.

In 2025, the client launched customized alternative sourcing from Chinese supply chains, requiring fully customized specifications instead of standard domestic off-the-shelf products. It successively contacted three leading domestic Ectoin fermentation manufacturers (Furuida, Jiakai Biology and Heyao Biology). However, all factories only offered standardized mass-produced grades and refused to adjust processes, optimize indicators, customize crystal powder forms and internal control standards according to the client’s formula. Manufacturers claimed customized production adjustments would incur high costs and small-batch trial production would be unprofitable, resulting in a full halt to the client’s customization project and delayed launch of its new serum line. The client entrusted HiSiaddi with full-cycle project coordination, including process coordination, indicator calibration, sample trial production and mass production, as well as compliance supporting services.

Four Mandatory Customization Requirements of the Client (Distinct from Standard Industrial/Cosmetic-Grade Off-the-Shelf Products)

    1. Customized Purity: HPLC purity ≥99.6% (standard mass-produced products only reach 98.5%~99.2%), single impurity ≤0.03%, total impurities ≤0.1%. Strict control over trace fermentation by-products to fit high-activity post-procedure serum formulas and prevent redness and irritation on sensitive skin caused by raw material impurities.

    2. Customized Powder Form: Custom 80-mesh spherical crystal particles (standard products are mostly 120-mesh fine powder), angle of repose 32°±2°, low hygroscopicity, compatible with fully automatic low-temperature vacuum batching production lines to avoid dusting, caking and wall adhesion during feeding.

    3. Customized Internal Control Indicators: Heavy metals (Pb, As, Hg, Cd) ≤0.5ppm, loss on drying ≤0.2%, residue on ignition ≤0.05%, stable pH value of 5.8~6.2 for 1% aqueous solution, matching the weak acid formula system of the client’s serums.

    4. Customized Clean Label: Entire production without chemical organic solvent extraction or exogenous additives. Full-chain strain traceability and fermentation process records provided to pass ECOCERT organic raw material traceability audits for EU organic skincare.

II. Core Barriers Blocking Client Customization

    1. Fixed mass production production lines, reluctance to adjust processes: Domestic large manufacturers run continuous production lines for standard 99% grade products with fixed parameters for crystallization, filtration and spray drying. Modifying crystallization processes to produce spherical particles and improve purification accuracy requires line shutdown and technical transformation. Prioritizing profits from standard orders, factories declined to fine-tune line parameters exclusively for overseas clients.

    2. Disagreements on testing standards: Factory-provided Certificates of Analysis (COA) follow domestic group standard T/QLMZ15-2024 with loose indicators, failing to customize test items or issue full English test reports in line with the internal control standards of Swiss pharmaceutical labs.

    3. Disconnection between lab trial and pilot scale-up: The client required a stepwise sample schedule: 5kg lab samples → 50kg pilot samples → batch mass supply, while factories only accepted minimum orders of one ton and refused iterative sampling in small batches.

    4. Lack of supporting compliance documents: Customized products required EU-verifiable COA, GHS English MSDS and pre-audit documents for ECOCERT raw material certification, which domestic manufacturers lacked the capacity to prepare.

III. Full-Set Customized Solutions Implemented Step by Step by HiSiaddi

Step 1: Screen Suitable Manufacturers and Finalize Customization Cooperation Partner

HiSiaddi conducted horizontal comparison of technical routes of Furuida, Jiakai Biology and Heyao Biology:

    · Furuida: Large mass production capacity, but highly automated fixed production lines leading to excessive costs for crystallization process modification – eliminated.

    · Jiakai Biology: Focused on standard cosmetic-grade raw materials with insufficient R&D capacity for high-purity pharmaceutical-grade customization – eliminated.

    · Finalized Heyao Biology: Own patented halophilic bacteria fermentation strains and dual-membrane separation purification workshops, equipped with flexible pilot production lines for small-batch runs, enabling flexible adjustment of "bacterial milking" fermentation and crystallization section parameters to meet targeted customization demands. Leveraging the 75-ton annual long-term order as bargaining leverage, HiSiaddi signed a special customization cooperation agreement with the factory, stipulating phased lab trial, pilot scale-up and mass production, and shared part of technical transformation and debugging costs to eliminate the factory’s concerns about losses from customized production adjustments.

Step 2: Three-Stage Process Calibration to Fulfill All Four Customization Indicators

Stage 1: 5kg Lab Trial Calibration (12 Working Days)

    1. Purity Optimization: Adjusted two-stage nanofiltration and reverse osmosis dual-membrane purification processes, extended low-temperature crystallization standing time to remove trace amino acid by-products. After three rounds of repeated lab trials, HPLC purity stabilized above 99.62%, with all single impurities below 0.03%.

    2. Particle Modification: Adjusted cooling crystallization rate and stirring speed, abandoning rapid crystallization used in standard production. Slow gradient cooling precipitated spherical crystals, sieved to customized 80-mesh particle size with measured angle of repose at 31.8°, meeting flowability requirements for feeding.

    3. Physical & Chemical Index Control: Optimized carbon sources in fermentation media by adopting high-purity food-grade glycerin to limit heavy metal introduction. Low-temperature vacuum drying was adopted in the drying section, stabilizing loss on drying at 0.17% and locking pH within 5.9~6.1.

    4. 5kg customized samples were air-shipped to Switzerland for client lab formula trials: when added to 3% high-concentration Ectoin repair serum, no delamination or precipitation occurred after compounding. Raw material stability passed 3-month accelerated storage testing at 45°C, and dermatological human patch safety testing was completed.

    Stage 2: 50kg Pilot Scale-Up (18 Working Days)

HiSiaddi stationed on-site staff to oversee full production line debugging, formalizing a complete customized process SOP covering fermentation pH, salinity and crystallization temperature to lock production parameters and avoid indicator fluctuations during mass production. Finished pilot products underwent dual testing by domestic CNAS-accredited laboratories and Swiss SGS, with all indicators fully complying with the client’s customized internal control standards. Meanwhile, moisture-proof packaging was optimized with customized double-layer light-proof aluminum foil bags built-in molecular sieve desiccants to prevent moisture absorption during long-distance ocean shipping to Switzerland in high-humidity environments.

Stage 3: Mass Production Launch and Batch Scheduling

Production was scheduled in six batches according to the client’s monthly manufacturing plan, with an initial mass production order of 12 tons of customized Ectoin. Strict control was enforced to limit purity deviation between batches to ≤0.08%, far superior to batch errors of standard commercial raw materials.

Step 3: Customized Supporting Compliance Documents to Meet EU Import and Brand Registration Requirements

    1. Customized English COA: Full English factory test reports issued in compliance with both Swiss pharmaceutical lab internal standards and EP Pharmacopoeia, marking CAS No. 96702-03-3, strain numbers and traceability codes for each production process, enabling item-by-item verification by EU drug regulators.

    2. Customized GHS English MSDS: Revised compliant MSDS based on physical and chemical parameters of customized products for EU ocean freight customs declaration and Swiss entry inspection.

    3. Raw Material Traceability Dossier Compilation: Consolidated strain cultivation records, fermentation feeding ledgers and purification process records to assist the client in completing ECOCERT organic raw material pre-audit for EU registration of the brand’s premium organic skincare products.

    IV. Project Outcomes

    1. Client Side: Customized raw materials cleared customs smoothly at Geneva Port, Switzerland, and were put into mass production for the three salon repair product lines. The new high-concentration Ectoin serum was launched on schedule at Swiss chain pharmacies and private dermatology clinics. Raw material procurement costs decreased by 32% compared with direct imports from German manufacturer Bitop, while customized indicators outperformed the original imported raw materials. The client subsequently renewed a 75-ton annual framework procurement long-term order and added a letter of intent for customized hydroxyectoin derivatives.

    2. Manufacturer (Heyao Biology): Leveraging this benchmark customization case for a high-end Swiss client, the factory perfected flexible customized production line standards for high-purity Ectoin, and subsequently secured customized orders from multiple premium European cosmetic brands in France and Austria, achieving a 28% export premium for its high-end customized grades.

    3. HiSiaddi Foreign Trade: Established an Ectoin customized process database and formed a standardized customization service system covering "client formula demand → factory process screening → phased lab trial & pilot scale-up → indicator customization + compliance support", bridging the supply chain between domestic biological fermentation raw materials and mid-to-high-end European cosmetic customization.

    V. Project Summary

Most domestic Ectoin manufacturers rely on continuous mass production for cost advantages, featuring standardized production lines with limited flexibility for process adjustments, prioritizing off-the-shelf national standard products and resisting niche high-end targeted customization. Mid-to-high-end European cosmetic brands require strict safety standards for formula systems, EU regulations and salon products, making standard off-the-shelf raw materials ineligible for use. Drawing on industrial chain resources, HiSiaddi eliminated manufacturers’ concerns about technical transformation through long-term order commitments, and delivered process customization, indicator optimization and compliance support in phases, resolving the dual pain points of manufacturers’ reluctance to provide customized products and clients’ inability to source suitable raw materials, thus realizing localized customized replacement of high-end raw materials.
