Purchaser: RubberVech Srl, Milan, Italy A well-established European Tier 2 supporting manufacturer targeting mid-to-high-end automotive rubber end products, not a trading intermediary. Main products: EPDM air suspension bellows for buses, NBR hydraulic oil seals for heavy-duty trucks, chassis damping rubber parts for commercial vehicles. Its products are original supporting components for Iveco and Fiat commercial vehicles, complying with EU REACH, RoHS, Italian DM food contact specifications, IATF16949 automotive material standards and DIN rubber physical & chemical testing standards.
The enterprise previously purchased original refined TBBS grades from Lanxess Germany for vulcanization accelerators. In the past two years, raw material prices in Europe have surged and overseas factory capacity has been constrained, extending delivery lead times from 35 days to over 90 days. The customer thus launched a localized customized replacement project sourcing from China, with an annual rigid TBBS demand of 260 tons.
Conventional national standard industrial-grade TBBS available on the market causes severe volatilization during high-temperature mixing, surface bubbling on rubber products and excessive in-vehicle VOC after being incorporated into formulas. Most mainstream domestic additive factories only mass-produce standard off-the-shelf TBBS with fixed synthesis and crystallization processes, refusing to invest extra equipment and R&D costs for non-standard customized optimization. The customer entrusted HiSiaddi, a technology-focused foreign trader, to fully undertake the whole process from formula customization, process improvement, lab and pilot trials to mass production launch.
HiSiaddi has years of experience in rubber accelerator export business, with direct access to large-scale domestic TBBS production bases upstream. Its team includes rubber formulation engineers and synthesis process specialists. Unlike ordinary resale traders, HiSiaddi can deliver customized development across the full chain: raw material screening, synthesis regulation, recrystallization refining, pre-dispersion pelletizing and downstream rubber compound compatibility testing, alongside full-spectrum export compliance supporting services.
1. Free tert-butylamine ≤0.12% (general domestic TBBS normally ranges from 0.4% to 0.8%). Strict control of volatilization during high-temperature internal mixing to meet EU in-vehicle VOC environmental limits and eliminate bubble defects in rubber compounds;
2. Initial melting point ≥108.5°C, heating loss ≤0.20%. Compatible with 155°C one-stage high-temperature internal mixing without premature decomposition and failure during processing;
3. Insoluble impurities ≤0.08% to avoid internal particle voids and attenuation of mechanical strength in damping rubber;
4. Two customized product categories: ① High-purity crystalline powdered TBBS (for light-colored damping rubber) with APHA color ≤45; ② EPDM carrier pre-dispersed TBBS-80 pellets (for black oil seals and air bellows) with active component content of 79.5%~80.5%, dust-free and free of caking after six months of room-temperature storage.
Conventional domestic TBBS adopts water-phase crystallization and low-cost post-treatment processes, which cannot simultaneously satisfy the three indicators of low free amine, low impurities and low chroma. Multiple factories declined dedicated technical renovation for customized production after assessment.
Combining the customer’s two compound systems (EPDM and NBR), HiSiaddi engineers collaborated with the manufacturer’s R&D team to optimize three core processes:
1. Synthesis section: Adjust feed ratios and catalytic systems, precisely control the molar ratio of tert-butylamine and sulfenyl chloride feedstock, and adopt low-temperature gradient condensation to reduce residual unreacted free tert-butylamine at the source of the reaction;
2. Refining section: Replace water washing with secondary recrystallization purification using anhydrous solvents to substitute the industry’s conventional impurity removal via water washing. This drastically reduces inorganic salt insoluble impurities in finished products, while optimizing crystallization rate to improve product whiteness and control chroma;
3. Formulation differentiation: High-purity powder undergoes closed negative-pressure drying; pre-dispersed pellets adopt food-grade EPDM raw rubber as carriers and low-temperature twin-screw extrusion pelletizing to avoid discoloration risks brought by ordinary SBR carriers.
The factory deployed a 50kg small pilot line with four rounds of fine-tuning on crystallization temperature and solvent ratio. The finalized customized TBBS achieved the following test results: free tert-butylamine 0.10%, melting point 109.2°C, heating loss 0.17%, impurities 0.06%, APHA color 41 – all superior to the customer’s specified threshold limits. Pre-dispersed pellets maintained stable active content of 80.1% with no caking and qualified dispersibility.
HiSiaddi uniformly packed samples and shipped them to the customer’s laboratory in Italy for internal mixing testing using the customer’s existing vulcanization formula. Vulcanization curves, scorch time and tensile strength were benchmarked against original Lanxess products.
A complete set of production SOPs was finalized, and an independent pilot production line was designated to manufacture a 1-ton pilot batch shipped to Italy by sea. The customer conducted uninterrupted 72-hour continuous trial production across three mass production lines: no yellowing on light-colored rubber, no bubbling in black air bellows, finished product VOC testing compliant with EU in-vehicle environmental regulations, and one-time pass of third-party incoming inspection by Iveco.
1. The factory allocated an exclusive customized production line with fixed raw materials and process parameters, segregated from general industrial-grade TBBS production lines to guarantee consistent batch-to-batch indicators;
2. HiSiaddi compiled complete supporting documents: English COA, full-item REACH-SVHC test reports, bilingual CLP GHS-SDS, Italian DM compliance statements, to support customer warehousing, EU customs clearance and vehicle enterprise system audits.
1. Order breakdown: 260 tons per year scheduled for balanced monthly production, including 110 tons of high-purity refined powdered TBBS and 150 tons of EPDM pre-dispersed TBBS-80 pellets;
2. Cost optimization: Comprehensive procurement cost of domestically customized TBBS decreased by 29.7% compared to original Lanxess Germany products, and sea freight lead time was shortened to 28 days;
3. Follow-up incremental cooperation: In the subsequent year, the customer launched a new new energy bus damping rubber project. HiSiaddi collaborated with the factory to develop low-temperature resistant modified TBBS grades, adding an annual procurement demand of 85 tons;
4. Long-term after-sales service: HiSiaddi conducts pre-shipment sampling inspection of key indicators for every batch, and provides a dedicated processing instruction manual for customized products with each shipment.
Domestic TBBS manufacturers focus on mass production and cost reduction for general industrial products while neglecting high-end customization. Technical renovations such as secondary recrystallization and anhydrous purification increase production costs, and factories lack downstream formulation technical support, making them unwilling to modify processes exclusively for individual customers. European mid-to-high-end commercial vehicle rubber enterprises adopt highly refined formulas, and standard off-the-shelf additives fail to meet strict VOC and low impurity requirements. Independent trial testing incurs high costs and long cycles.
HiSiaddi connects customer formulation demands with upstream process customization, lab and pilot trials, mass production launch and supporting compliance services across the full industrial chain. Supported by dual expertise in additive synthesis and rubber application, it bridges the information gap between manufacturers lacking application technology and overseas customers lacking domestic production resources, enabling localized production of high-end additives.
For European and American commercial vehicle Tier suppliers purchasing vulcanization accelerators, matching customized performance, stable batch consistency, full-cycle technical support and compliance packages take priority over unit product price. Exclusive customized services constitute the core competitiveness for domestic TBBS to penetrate high-end European auto parts supply chains.
