The purchaser is Alpine Dairy, a high-end dairy group based in Zurich, Switzerland, with over 30 years of experience in handmade alpine cheese and organic fermented dairy products. Its Gruyère, Emmental aged hard cheese and fresh soft white mould cheese are supplied to high-end supermarkets and Michelin bakery stores across Switzerland, France and Luxembourg. All its products comply with five major access standards: EU EFSA, LFGB, FCC, KOSHER and HALAL. As a typical mid-to-high-end food manufacturer, the group’s annual total procurement volume of natamycin (E235) reaches 26 tons. It previously purchased customized natamycin exclusively from DSM Netherlands. However, surging overseas raw material prices and extended customization lead times of over 45 days prompted the client to launch a localized procurement plan for customized products made in China.
The client independently contacted three major domestic natamycin manufacturers, yet all mass-produced domestic products adopted standard commercial specifications: 95% high-purity powder and 50% lactose-diluted variants, all manufactured per domestic national standards as off-the-shelf stock without support for personalized customization. Trial samples produced by multiple factories failed consecutively, stalling the client’s customization project. The group then entrusted foreign trade firm HiSiaddi to fully liaise with manufacturers and deliver exclusive customized natamycin products. The client put forward three mandatory customization requirements:
1. Carrier Customization: Replace the commonly used lactose carrier with food-grade refined maltodextrin to avoid lactose excess in cheese, compatible with the brand’s organic lactose-free product line; fix the active ingredient content at 42%±1%, different from the mainstream 50% specification on the market.
2. Physical Property Customization: Conventional natamycin powder is fine and prone to dusting. The client’s automated spray coating production line requires spherical granulated particles of 80–100 mesh that disperse quickly in water without caking or dusting, matching the automatic liquid preparation system.
3. Internal Control Indicator Customization: Beyond compliance with EU E235 regulations, control fermentation byproducts, residual organic solvents and heavy metal limits to standards over 3 times stricter than China’s national standards; provide bilingual Certificates of Analysis (COA), dual KOSHER & HALAL certifications, and 1kg vacuum aluminum foil individual packaging (market standard options are 500g and 25kg).
Challenges for domestic manufacturers: General production lines are configured for lactose formulation without dedicated spray granulation equipment. Full process adjustments including fermentation purification, compounding and granulation are required for customized production, leading to high costs for small-batch customization, so most factories are reluctant to retool their production lines separately.
Relying on designated leading domestic natamycin manufacturers (Shandong Freda and Zhejiang New Silver Elephant, national standard drafting institutions with full FDA and BRC system certifications), HiSiaddi split the customized requirements and implemented customized production in five sequential stages: strain fermentation optimization, carrier compound modification, spherical spray granulation, targeted refining of indicators, and customized compliant packaging.
Conventional products use lactose as filler. HiSiaddi coordinated manufacturers to revise compound formulas and adopt low-DE food-grade maltodextrin to replace lactose. HPLC testing was used to repeatedly calibrate feeding ratios to stabilize natamycin active ingredients within the range of 42.0%–42.9%. The pre-mixing stirring process was optimized to achieve uniform molecular combination of active ingredients and maltodextrin, eliminating storage stratification and local excessive active content, and fundamentally resolving the hidden risk of excessive lactose in finished cheese.
Original standard products are crystalline fine powder. HiSiaddi coordinated manufacturers to deploy a dedicated small-scale spray drying granulation line, adjusting three process parameters: inlet air temperature, atomization pressure and feed liquid solid content. The feed liquid was formed into uniform spherical particles of 80–100 mesh via high-pressure atomization and low-temperature drying. Actual tests showed complete dispersion within 30 seconds in water with no floating residues or dust, perfectly matching the client’s automated spray liquid preparation line and boosting on-site liquid preparation efficiency by 30%.
On the basis of standard 95% high-purity raw materials compliant with national standards, two-stage negative pressure rectification was added to strictly control fermentation residues such as ethyl acetate and methanol solvent below 2ppm. Heavy metal limits were set at lead ≤0.5ppm and arsenic ≤0.2ppm (national standard limits: lead ≤2ppm, arsenic ≤2ppm). Total bacteria and mold counts were also controlled, and each batch was delivered with a full-item SGS third-party test report issued in Switzerland to meet EFSA food additive safety assessment limits.
Breaking manufacturers’ standard packaging sizes, customized 1kg independent vacuum aluminum foil packages were produced with neutral English outer carton printing marking E235, CAS 7681-93-8, product specifications and storage conditions. HiSiaddi assisted manufacturers in expediting single-batch KOSHER, HALAL certificates, Chinese-English bilingual COA and MSDS safety data sheets. The full set of documents met Swiss customs clearance and local food inspection filing requirements.
1. Laboratory Samples: HiSiaddi arranged three batches of factory samples to be sent to the client’s R&D laboratory in Switzerland. The client conducted antiseptic performance tests on two production lines for aged hard cheese and fresh white mould cheese respectively. After spraying with 42% maltodextrin spherical natamycin, the cheese showed no mould growth over 6 months of room-temperature ripening, no excessive lactose residues, and antiseptic performance equivalent to original imported products from the Netherlands.
2. Pilot Small Batch: The first customized shipment of 500kg was shipped to Switzerland by sea. Full industrial production was carried out, and finished products passed spot checks by Switzerland’s food safety authority before entering premium offline supermarkets.
3. Annual Mass Production Launch: The client finalized a 26-ton annual customized procurement framework, scheduled for delivery in 12 monthly batches.
Successfully deployed exclusive customized natamycin sourced from China, cutting raw material procurement costs by 28.7% compared with original Dutch imports and eliminating supply chain drawbacks of long customization lead times and frequent price hikes from overseas manufacturers. The lactose-free customized raw material supported the successful launch of the brand’s new organic cheese line, which achieved a 22% regional sales increase within six months of launch, while annual antiseptic raw material waste dropped by 15%.
Leveraging high-end European customized orders, manufacturers refined differentiated customized production line processes. The 42% maltodextrin spherical customized product commanded a 35% premium over standard 50% lactose bulk products, escaping low-price domestic market competition. Endorsed by the leading Swiss dairy client, the manufacturers subsequently secured customized orders from three high-end dairy enterprises in Austria and Belgium, opening up a niche European customized raw material market.
A standardized full-chain service model was established covering overseas customized demand breakdown, factory process transformation, formula customization, physical property modification, compliant packaging and sample follow-up. Differentiated core competitiveness was built through customized services, enabling continuous acceptance of customization commissions for natural preservatives from mid-to-high-end food enterprises across Western Europe.
Most domestic natamycin manufacturers focus on mass production of standard specifications with fixed production lines, formulas and packaging, and generally resist niche personalized customization due to high retooling costs and scheduling constraints. In contrast, mid-to-high-end overseas dairy enterprises have widespread non-standard customization demands arising from differences in product formulas, production line equipment and national regulations. As an independent third-party foreign trade intermediary, HiSiaddi bridges the gap between overseas customized requirements and flexible retooling capacity of domestic manufacturers, delivering exclusive customized solutions covering formulas, processes, packaging and compliance to achieve a win-win situation for purchasers, manufacturers and service providers.
