Case Study: Exclusive Customization Project of Methyl Dihydrojasmonate for Parfum Elegance, a Light Luxury Perfume Group Based in Paris, France

Parfum Elegance is a leading local mid-to-high-end perfume brand headquartered in Paris. It mainly operates counter light luxury floral perfumes, organic salon skincare fragrances and premium aromatherapy essential oils. Its products are sold at high-end counters of Galeries Lafayette Paris, Sephora Europe and Swiss boutique beauty retailers. The brand adopts raw material procurement standards on par with Firmenich and Givaudan, and all its raw materials comply with four major access specifications: IFRA Standard 49, EU REACH Regulation, COSMOS Organic Ingredient Control and LFGB. It previously imported customized-grade methyl dihydrojasmonate (Hedione) directly from Switzerland.

In 2025, the brand launched a new limited-edition jasmine-themed perfume requiring methyl dihydrojasmonate with differentiated customized indicators. Mass-produced standard domestic products failed to match its formulation parameters, while multiple flavor factories only supplied national standard general-grade products and refused to conduct targeted process modification. The client’s customized R&D project hit a bottleneck, so they entrusted HiSiaddi with full authority to coordinate with top domestic flavor factories to deliver exclusive customized production. After sample debugging, pilot trial production and mass production launch, the customized raw material was successfully put into production, and an annual customized procurement framework covering 112 tons was signed.

    I. Project Background: Client’s Exclusive Customization Requirements and Bottlenecks of Original Mass Production

(Customization for mid-to-high-end exclusive use, distinct from low-end general procurement)

    1. Three Mandatory Customization Indicators of the Client (Far Exceeding Conventional Standards GB31625 and QB/T4648 issued by the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China)

The core base of the client’s flagship new perfume formula is a blend of natural jasmine absolute and methyl dihydrojasmonate, with all customized parameters superior to common industrial-grade products on the market: ① Customized cis-trans isomer ratio: General national standard requires trans-isomer ≥85% and cis-isomer 9%~11%, while the client demands trans-isomer 89%~90% and cis-isomer 7.5%~8.2%. Fine-tuning the isomer ratio delivers soft, fresh jasmine top notes and long-lasting base notes, and avoids faint greasy off-notes caused by excessive cis-isomers in ordinary products. ② Strictly controlled acid value ≤0.3mgKOH/g: The national standard upper limit is 2.0mgKOH/g, and mass-produced high-end products on the market generally range from 0.6 to 1.0mgKOH/g. High acid value leads to rancid odor deterioration of perfumes after 3 months of storage and damages the stability of fragrance bases. ③ No artificial antioxidant additives: Conventional products usually contain approximately 500ppm BHT antioxidant. The client’s organic product line mandates zero BHT and trace phenol impurities ≤1ppm to meet COSMOS organic certification raw material requirements. Additional restrictions include water content ≤0.05% and total heavy metals <0.1ppm. Besides, customized low-volatility modified specifications are provided; with the same dosage, the fragrance retention time is 18% longer than general-grade products, suitable for high-fragrance-concentration perfume formulas of 18%.

    2. Pain Points Encountered When the Client Contacted Multiple Domestic Flavor Factories Independently

The client independently contacted three large-scale domestic manufacturers of methyl dihydrojasmonate (NHU, Wanxiang Fragrance Technology, Jiangsu Hongbang). All three factories mainly produce standardized mass-produced goods:

    1. Their mass production lines adopt fixed catalysis and rectification processes with general ratio design. No single factory was willing to modify the entire synthesis process and adjust segmented rectification parameters for niche customization orders.

    2. Factory R&D capacity was prioritized for large-volume standardized orders. Small-scale trial and pilot production for customization required extra investment in catalysts and rectification tower reconstruction. Most factories only promoted their in-stock standard grades and only made minor adjustments to conventional indicators, failing to meet the client’s requirements for precise isomer ratio and antioxidant-free formulation.

    3. A small number of factories could produce small-batch samples but could not achieve stable mass production, with batch-to-batch isomer fluctuation of ±2%. Fragrance consistency varied after blending with perfume formulas, preventing the client from mass-producing the new product.

The original Swiss supply had a 60-day lead time and a unit price 42% higher than domestic customized products. The client intended to control raw material costs while retaining exclusive fragrance formulas, putting the customization project on hold.

II. Full-Chain Customization Services Delivered by HiSiaddi: R&D Coordination → Process Improvement → Sample Iteration → Pilot Production Launch

Drawing on flavor R&D engineers and a reserve pool of cooperative domestic flavor factories, HiSiaddi selected Jiangsu Hongbang Chemical as the production partner for customized manufacturing, which is equipped with customized pilot workshops, flexible retrofit production lines and independent analytical laboratories. The full customized development was completed in 5 phases:

Phase 1: Disassemble Client’s Perfume Blending File and Issue Bilingual Chinese-English Customization Technical Agreement

HiSiaddi sorted out the fragrance spectrum, formula dosage data and international compliance standards provided by the client’s perfumers, converted abstract fragrance requirements into physical and chemical indicators implementable by factories, and clarified the raw material synthesis route, catalyst selection, segmented rectification temperature, post-treatment impurity removal process and intermediate sampling nodes. A customized technical confidentiality agreement was signed to ensure non-disclosure of the client’s formula data and prohibit the factory from selling the same customized products to third parties.

Phase 2: Laboratory Small-Batch Formula Iteration, 7 Rounds of Sample Screening to Meet Standards

    1. Adjust the catalyst system for the condensation reaction of cyclopentanone and n-valeraldehyde: replace traditional alkaline catalysts with mild composite ionic liquid catalysts to precisely control the generation ratio of cis-trans isomers. Reaction temperature and holding time were repeatedly adjusted to lock the target ratio of trans-isomer 89.6% and cis-isomer 7.8%.

    2. Optimize the two-stage post-treatment process of neutralization water washing and vacuum rectification, and add a molecular distillation fine deacidification section to remove free organic acid byproducts, stabilizing the acid value at 0.26~0.29mgKOH/g. Eliminate BHT addition in the finished product stage; the whole production process adopts sealed nitrogen protection to replace artificial antioxidants. Trace phenol impurities are further removed via resin adsorption, with phenol residue controlled at 0.72ppm to meet zero-additive compliance requirements.

    3. HiSiaddi sent 7 rounds of samples (2kg per round) to the client’s perfume laboratory in France for accelerated perfume storage tests (constant temperature at 45℃ for 90 days). Process parameters were fine-tuned in the first 6 rounds, and the 7th round of samples passed all tests on fragrance, physical and chemical properties and stability.

Phase 3: 500kg Pilot Trial Production to Verify Mass Production Stability

A dedicated flexible pilot production line was activated at the factory, with HiSiaddi’s quality control engineers stationed on-site for real-time monitoring of isomer, acid value and water content data. Indicator fluctuations of three batches of pilot finished products were all within the client’s tolerance range without batch deviation. Pilot products were airfreighted to France, and small-batch perfume filling tests conducted by the client showed no fragrance deterioration or rancid stratification after 12 months of normal-temperature storage.

Phase 4: Partial Technical Renovation of Mass Production Line to Secure an Exclusive Customization Production Line

The factory installed segmented temperature control modules on the original mass production rectification tower and designated an exclusive customization production line physically isolated from general product lines to avoid impurity contamination from cross-feeding. Fixed raw material feeding parameters and intermediate control standards were set for the customization line to guarantee consistent indicators across all batches from the source.

Phase 5: Customized Compliance Documentation Support

HiSiaddi simultaneously provided exclusive COA for customized products (batch-by-batch external standard GC test reports, different from area normalization tests for general products), IFRA compliance statements, REACH SVHC test reports and supplementary COSMOS raw material qualification documents, all in bilingual Chinese and English, to support France’s import filing and the brand’s organic certification audit.

III. Batch Shipment and Long-Term Customization Order Execution

    1. Initial Trial Order: The first customized batch of 16 tons was shipped in two consignments from Shanghai Port to Le Havre Port. French customs cleared the goods quickly with the complete set of customized compliance documents. The client launched mass production of the new perfume, which became the brand’s best-selling floral perfume within 3 months after launch.

    2. Annual Framework Contract Signing: Driven by outstanding terminal market feedback of the new product, the client finalized an annual framework order of 112 tons of customized methyl dihydrojasmonate, scheduled for production in 10 monthly batches. HiSiaddi tracked the full process of production progress, ex-factory quality inspection and export customs clearance monthly.

    IV. Benefits of Tripartite Cooperation

    1. French Mid-to-High-End Client Parfum Elegance

    1. Achieved domestic customized replacement of Swiss raw materials: unit procurement price of raw materials decreased by 38%, sea freight lead time shortened from 60 days to 23 days, and the supply chain of new product raw materials became independently controllable.

    2. Obtained exclusive customized raw materials with identical parameters unavailable to competitors, forming a differentiated barrier for perfume formulas. After launch, the European counter sales volume of the new product rose by 47% year-on-year compared with the brand’s previous flagship product. Supported by HiSiaddi’s customization service system, the client simultaneously launched a customized raw material project for organic body lotion fragrances under its brand portfolio.

    2. Domestic Customized Manufacturer (Jiangsu Hongbang)

    1. Upgraded products to high-end customized grades supported by the benchmark customization case of a French light luxury brand, with customized products commanding a 31% premium over general national standard goods.

    2. Refined the flexible customized production process for methyl dihydrojasmonate, and subsequently secured 3 additional customized orders for mid-to-high-end fragrances from Italy and Spain, completing its high-end customized product line and escaping low-price competition in mass-produced low-end products.

    3. Foreign Trade Service Provider HiSiaddi

    1. Established a standardized customization database for directional isomer separation and antioxidant-free high-end modification of methyl dihydrojasmonate, forming a one-stop service system for customized raw materials for European light luxury perfumes (demand translation → process coordination → quality control → compliance customs clearance).

    2. Opened up channels for domestic customized flavor raw materials to European light luxury perfume brands, and subsequently undertook customized orders for multiple high-end monomer fragrances including ionone and ambroxan.

    V. Project Summary

    1. Industry Pain Points: Domestic flavor factories focus on standardized mass production, and general grades can only meet procurement demands of low-end daily chemicals and cheap fragrances. Mid-to-high-end international perfume brands feature refined formulas and personalized indicators that cannot be matched by off-the-shelf general products. Factories lack capabilities in fragrance technical translation and regulation coordination when contacting overseas clients alone, creating high barriers to customization delivery.

    2. Procurement Characteristics of Mid-to-High-End Clients: Priority is given to raw material formulation compatibility, formula confidentiality and batch stability; clients will not choose non-standard low-cost general goods and are willing to pay a reasonable premium for exclusive customized processes. Customized raw materials serve as the core competitiveness for differentiated terminal products.

    3. Core Value of HiSiaddi: Act as a technical bridge between overseas perfumers and domestic chemical factories, translate fragrance requirements into industrial production indicators, coordinate production line technical renovation and deliver customization in phases, while providing complete multi-country compliance documents to connect the full chain from R&D to cross-border shipment of customized products.
