Vanaroma, a leading mid-to-high-end flavor enterprise in Europe, specializes in premium handmade chocolate flavors, organic infant dairy flavors and light luxury perfume base materials, supplying high-end organic supermarkets and Michelin-starred baking workshops across Germany and Austria. Raw material access complies with four major international certifications: EU EFSA, LFGB, FSSC22000 and Kosher. The group long-term purchased original ethyl vanillin from Rhodia France. In 2025, it launched a domestic raw material substitution project. After initial contact with five leading domestic ethyl vanillin manufacturers (Jiaxing Zhonghua Chemical · Jiuzhu, Ningbo Wanglong, NHU Shandong, Anhui Huaye Fragrance, Jiangsu Chuzhigu), sales teams from each manufacturer only promoted their own grades without objective comparison of competitive advantages. The client failed to distinguish differences between high-end grades of each brand or differentiate standard national standard grades from export premium grades, leading to flavor deviation and unstable storage performance in four tested samples and stalled brand selection. The client entrusted HiSiaddi to horizontally disassemble full-line parameter and application advantages/disadvantages of the five brands from a neutral perspective, ultimately selecting two mid-to-high-end manufacturers and three dedicated grades, with an initial order of 18.2 tons delivered and a long-term framework procurement contract of 75 tons per year signed.
Three differentiated ethyl vanillin variants were required for three product lines: ① Infant Formula Yogurt Grade: Low impurities, no bitter hydrolysis under weak acidic conditions, fast cold water solubility, isomer ≤0.02%. ② High-Temperature Dark Chocolate Grade: No volatilization during 115℃ cooking, no crystal bloom during storage, excellent liposolubility. ③ Perfume Fixative Grade: Long-lasting aroma, low volatility, no sharp burnt off-notes, ultra-high pharmaceutical-grade internal control purity. The client lacked familiarity with domestic brand hierarchies and process routes of each manufacturer, as well as grade classification (general food grade / export premium grade / pharmaceutical grade).
The client separately inquired with five major domestic manufacturers:
1. Jiaxing Zhonghua Chemical (Jiuzhu): Only promoted its full product portfolio, elaborating solely on its green continuous hydrogenation process advantages without referencing Wanglong’s cost performance or NHU’s pharmaceutical-grade strengths.
2. Ningbo Wanglong: Focused on promoting mass-produced bulk goods, emphasizing production capacity and cost without mentioning Zhonghua’s high-end crystal grades or Huaye Fragrance’s daily chemical advantages.
3. NHU Shandong: Highlighted pharmaceutical-grade ethyl vanillin, only publicizing its ultra-high purity indicators while avoiding food application shortcomings.
4. Anhui Huaye Fragrance & Jiangsu Chuzhigu: Focused on daily chemicals and general baking raw materials respectively, neither acknowledging competitors’ strengths in dairy and chocolate segmented applications. All manufacturers followed industry norms of not slandering peers yet refused to objectively introduce competitive product advantages. The client received nine mixed-grade samples from five manufacturers (three low-end national standard general grades and six export premium grades). Independent blind testing revealed chocolate grade bloom formation, yogurt grade shelf-life bitterness and excessive off-notes in perfume grades, preventing identification of matching specifications and halting independent factory selection.
Supported by flavor engineering resources, HiSiaddi collected factory COAs, internal control indicators, process routes, matching application scenarios and parameter sheets of three mainstream grades for all five brands, compiling bilingual Chinese-English comparative selection reports objectively listing advantages and shortcomings of each brand without bias toward any manufacturer:
· Advantages: Continuous green hydrogenation process, all grades reach ≥99.5% main content with segmented high-end crystal grades and ultra-low impurity infant formula grades. Ortho-isomer controllable below 0.018%, full FCC/USP/BP certifications, top-tier compatibility with chocolate and dairy products, global supplier to Givaudan and Firmenich.
· Shortcomings: Premium customized grades carry higher unit prices, high minimum order quantities for bulk standard goods, limited production capacity for pharmaceutical-grade variants.
· Mainstream Grades Sold: Type I Infant Formula Refined Grade, Type II High-Temperature Resistant Chocolate Grade, General National Standard Standard Grade.
· Advantages: Integrated industrial chain with outstanding cost performance for general food grades, stable mass delivery, optimal for bulk baking and candy procurement, complete Kosher/Halal certifications.
· Shortcomings: Weak impurity control for premium refined grades, conventional grades feature approximately 0.04% isomer content, poor compatibility with high-temperature chocolate and infant formula dairy products, no dedicated refined crystal customization production lines.
· Mainstream Grades Sold: General Baking Grade A, Beverage Grade B, Economical Daily Chemical Grade C.
· Advantages: Pharmaceutical-grade ethyl vanillin ≥99.9% purity, ultra-low heavy metal and intermediate residues, superior thermal stability, ideal for pharmaceutical and high-end perfume fixation.
· Shortcomings: Limited food-dedicated grades, weak liposolubility requiring additional auxiliary agents for chocolate and dairy formula applications, highest unit pricing for mass production.
· Mainstream Grades Sold: Ultra-High Purity Pharmaceutical Grade D, Daily Chemical Grade E.
· Advantages: Mature daily chemical production processes, high compatibility with perfumes and washing care flavors, flexible small-batch order acceptance.
· Shortcomings: Limited premium food-grade product lines, insufficient application data for dairy products.
· Advantages: Eco-friendly production process, cost-effective low-end food grades.
· Shortcomings: No dedicated high-end grades for infant formula and chocolate, products limited to basic national standard specifications.
Based on the client’s three mid-to-high-end application scenarios (infant formula dairy, high-temperature chocolate and premium perfume), Wanglong, Huaye and Chuzhigu were eliminated due to insufficient product matching capacity. Two qualified core suppliers were finalized: Zhonghua Chemical (Jiuzhu) and NHU Shandong, alongside three segmented dedicated grades:
1. Jiuzhu Type I Infant Formula Refined Grade (Zhonghua Chemical) Matching Scenario: Organic Infant Yogurt. Specifications: Main content ≥99.55%, ortho-isomer ≤0.018%, solvent residue <30ppm, complete cold water solubility at low temperature, resolving the client’s original yogurt storage bitterness and flavor precipitation issues, supported by full LFGB and SGS test reports.
2. Jiuzhu Type II High-Temperature Resistant Chocolate Grade (Zhonghua Chemical) Matching Scenario: 115℃ high-temperature dark chocolate. Optimized gradient crystallization process produces uniform short columnar crystals with moisture ≤0.29%, excellent cocoa butter compatibility eliminating white bloom formation during ambient storage, sensory performance benchmarked against original French imported raw materials.
3. NHU Type D Ultra-High Purity Pharmaceutical Grade (NHU Shandong) Matching Scenario: Light Luxury Perfume Fixative. Main content ≥99.9%, trace impurities <5ppm, pure aroma free of burnt off-notes, long-lasting low-temperature fragrance, perfectly compatible with premium perfume base formulas.
1. Three Rounds of Sample Shipment: HiSiaddi coordinated 5kg sample production from both factories for air shipment to Germany. The client’s R&D center conducted 3-month normal/low-temperature accelerated stability testing, with all three raw materials passing formula testing, delivering bloom-free chocolate, non-bitter yogurt and qualified perfume flavor performance.
2. Small-Batch Trial Order: Initial split-spec trial procurement of 7t Type I, 6.8t Type II and 4.4t Type D, totaling 18.2 tons, shipped in two consolidated shipments from Shanghai Port to Hamburg. HiSiaddi provided supporting REACH registration documents, bilingual COAs and notarized free sales certificates for smooth customs clearance and warehousing.
3. Long-Term Annual Order Sign-Off: After six months of stable end-product production testing, the client finalized a 75-ton annual framework order split into eight monthly production batches.
1. Successfully realized domestic raw material substitution, cutting comprehensive procurement costs by 35% compared with original French imports and shortening lead times from 45 days to 22 days. Eliminated losses from blind sample testing and scrapped unqualified raw material batches.
2. Leveraged HiSiaddi’s brand selection database to establish graded acceptance standards for domestic ethyl vanillin, prioritizing HiSiaddi for brand screening in future new flavor product development.
· Zhonghua Chemical: Secured stable long-term orders from European premium infant formula and chocolate clients, with a 28% export premium for premium grades.
· NHU Shandong: Opened export channels for European premium perfume raw materials, securing subsequent orders from two Dutch perfume enterprises relying on ultra-high-purity Type D grades. The three eliminated manufacturers (Wanglong, Huaye, Chuzhigu) simultaneously received the client’s product demand files, with priority for future general-grade procurement for the client’s low-end candy line to achieve staggered cooperative opportunities.
1. Established a grading database covering five domestic ethyl vanillin brands (general grade / premium food grade / pharmaceutical grade), forming standardized brand selection services for European mid-to-high-end food and daily chemical clients.
2. Secured subsequent brand selection projects for three equivalent flavor enterprises in Spain and Austria.
1. Industry Pain Points: Domestic flavor manufacturers adopt self-centered sales strategies, only promoting proprietary products without objective comparison of competitive advantages. Overseas mid-to-high-end clients lack awareness of domestic brand grading, easily purchasing low-end national standard raw materials leading to scrapped formulas.
2. Procurement Characteristics of Mid-to-High-End Clients: Price is not the sole priority; matching terminal product flavor, storage stability and cross-border compliance standards carry greater weight, with clients willing to pay reasonable premiums for compatible premium grades.
3. Core Value of HiSiaddi: Acting as a neutral third-party foreign trade service provider independent of single factory interests, HiSiaddi conducts horizontal full-brand parameter disassembly and targeted grade screening to break information barriers between supply and demand sides.
