Case Study: Custom Modified THPS 75 (75% Aqueous Tetrakis(Hydroxymethyl)Phosphonium Sulfate) for Norgreen, a Premium Oil & Gas Environmental Service Provider in Norway

HiSiaddi delivered full-spectrum customized solutions including formula modification, dedicated production line setup and packaging optimization, securing an annual long-term procurement contract of 186 tons.

    I. Client Profile

Founded in 1992, Norgreen is a well-established premium environmental chemical service provider headquartered in Oslo, Norway. Its core business covers bacteriostasis and corrosion prevention for reinjection water systems of offshore oilfields in the North Sea, as well as biological slime treatment for subsea pipelines. It supplies products to Equinor (Norwegian state oil company) and offshore drilling platforms across Northern Europe. All raw materials must comply with Norway’s KLIF environmental regulations, EU REACH registration and OSPAR marine environmental control standards, and its finished chemicals are included in platform access lists with extremely stringent tolerance standards for purchased raw materials.

The client previously purchased customized THPS 75 from BASF Germany on a long-term basis. However, shrinking local chemical production capacity in Europe, surging raw material prices and extended lead times of up to 110 days prompted the client to seek localized customized alternatives. Its total annual demand for THPS 75 stands at 186 tons, to be delivered in three quarterly batches.

Standard domestic THPS 75 compliant with national standards only meets conventional onshore water treatment scenarios and fails to adapt to the high-salinity, low-temperature and high-pressure operating conditions of North Sea offshore oilfields. The client put forward four mandatory customized technical indicators. Conventional domestic THPS manufacturers only mass-produce standard off-the-shelf products without R&D capacity for modification. All sample matching tests ended in failure, and factories were reluctant to invest in technical renovations. The client thus entrusted HiSiaddi’s foreign trade team to deliver end-to-end customized development.

Four Mandatory Customized Requirements (Distinct from Standard Industrial-Grade THPS 75)

    1. Precise active ingredient content at 75.0±0.3%: Standard commercial products fluctuate between 73% and 77%. Fixed central control formulas of the client will lose efficacy if content deviation exceeds 0.5%.

    2. Free formaldehyde ≤80ppm: General national standard products normally contain 300–500ppm free formaldehyde, which violates Norway’s offshore formaldehyde emission limits.

    3. No crystallization or stratification at -12°C: Winter cabin temperatures on North Sea offshore platforms are extremely low; standard THPS precipitates crystals at -5°C, blocking pipelines.

    4. Low chloride ion content ≤50ppm: High chloride levels corrode stainless steel water injection pipelines on offshore platforms, while ordinary production processes generate chloride levels above 200ppm.

Additional customized supporting services: IBC totes lined with customized PTFE, tri-lingual GHS labels for Northern Europe, and full sets of GLP EU-certified COA documents for each batch.

II. Three Major Bottlenecks in Customization Implementation (Unsolvable by Domestic Manufacturers Independently)

    1. Formula Modification Barrier: Traditional THPS synthesis adopts phosphoric acid + formaldehyde routes, which cannot simultaneously cut formaldehyde and chloride levels. Fixed synthesis reactor processes at factories require catalyst replacement and segmented temperature-controlled synthesis for formula fine-tuning, yet single factories refuse to bear independent R&D and debugging costs.

    2. Mass Production Control Barrier: Narrow-range content control of ±0.3% requires real-time online refractometric monitoring, equipment absent from most conventional manufacturers, leading to excessive batch-to-batch content fluctuations.

    3. Packaging & Compliance Customization Barrier: Standard PE liners for common IBC totes cannot resist weak acid corrosion of THPS. Ocean shipping to Northern Europe complies with UN2922 dangerous goods specifications (Class 8 corrosive + Class 6.1 toxic liquid). Factories lack resources for PTFE-lined customized packaging and professional knowledge of Northern European labeling regulations.

III. Step-by-Step End-to-End Customized Solutions Implemented by HiSiaddi

    1. R&D & Formula Customization: Modified Process Debugging Jointly with Fine Chemical Laboratories

HiSiaddi partnered with a domestic specialized phosphorus additive manufacturer and third-party fine chemical laboratories to revamp the synthetic route: adopting high-purity phosphorous acid raw materials and low-formaldehyde polymerization catalysts for segmented gradient temperature-controlled synthesis. After 32 groups of lab trials, free formaldehyde was stably controlled within 62–75ppm and chloride ions at 42–48ppm. Repeated concentration and rectification locked the solid content at an exact 75%, with no crystallization or stratification after 72 hours of freezing at -15°C. All technical indicators fully met the client’s customized standards.

    2. Customized Mass Production Process: On-Site Supervision of Production Line Renovation & Online Quality Control

We coordinated factory renovations to install online refractometric concentration detectors on reaction kettles. Samples were sent to CNAS-certified laboratories for retesting every two hours, with full inspections of formaldehyde, chloride ions and low-temperature stability conducted for each batch before delivery to eliminate indicator drift across batches. A dedicated customized production line was scheduled separately from standard industrial-grade THPS production to avoid cross-contamination.

    3. Full-Set Customization of Packaging & Documentation

    1. Packaging Customization: PTFE-lined IBC totes were tailor-made, passing domestic dangerous goods packaging performance appraisal and obtaining UN2922 dangerous goods packaging certificates to satisfy ocean shipping compliance requirements for hazardous chemicals.

    2. Documentation Customization: Tri-lingual SDS and hazard labels (Norwegian / English / Chinese) were compiled in accordance with Norway and EU GHS regulations. Each batch came with bilingual COA issued by GLP-accredited laboratories, directly applicable to Norway KLIF environmental filings and EU REACH tonnage notifications.

IV. Sample Testing, Mass Production & Signing of Annual Long-Term Contract

    1. Sample Stage: HiSiaddi packed 5kg customized samples and airfreighted them to Norway. After 45 days of on-site oilfield compatibility tests, high-low temperature accelerated stability tests and marine ecotoxicology tests conducted by the client’s laboratory, all samples passed raw material access inspections for Equinor platforms.

    2. Small-Batch Trial Production: The first batch of 28 tons customized THPS 75 completed domestic hazardous chemical customs declaration and ocean shipment to Oslo, Norway, clearing customs and warehousing smoothly. Deployed in reinjection water systems of two North Sea offshore platforms, it outperformed BASF’s original product in bacteriostasis and corrosion inhibition performance.

    3. Annual Contract Signing: Norgreen fully phased out its German raw material supplier and signed a quarterly delivery annual contract of 186 tons with HiSiaddi. The customized formula will be retained for all subsequent batches, with HiSiaddi taking full charge of customized production, factory outgoing quality inspection and export compliance management throughout the whole supply chain.

Cost Advantages: Unit procurement price of domestic customized raw materials dropped by 27.8% compared to original BASF products, while ocean shipping lead time was reduced to 36 days.

    V. Project Review

    1. Industry Pain Points: Most domestic THPS manufacturers focus on mass-producing standard national standard 75% off-the-shelf products targeting low-end onshore water treatment markets, with no willingness to invest in R&D and modification due to low profit returns from technical renovations. High-end Northern European oil and gas clients face dual constraints of offshore environmental protection and offshore equipment anti-corrosion regulations, imposing strict customized thresholds non-existent for low-volume purchasers.

    2. Core Value of HiSiaddi: Leveraging upstream factory resources and third-party R&D resources, we integrate formula R&D, customized production lines, packaging compliance and export documentation for end-to-end delivery, making up for manufacturers’ deficiencies in customized R&D. Professional customized services enable long-term cooperation with high-quality overseas mid-to-high-end oil and gas clients.
