Purchaser: ITALIA OUTDOOR POLY SRL, located in Milan, Italy. With 26 years of expertise in high weather-resistant PP/PE outdoor garden profiles, high-end acid-alkali resistant functional agricultural shed films, and modified plastic accessories for RV exteriors, it supplies major local agricultural machinery groups in Italy and top-tier European RV brands. Its products comply with EU REACH, EC 10/2011 food contact standards, ISO 4892 xenon lamp weathering test standards, and EU agricultural chemical erosion resistance standards. Its annual regular procurement volume of UV 1084 stands at 45 tons, with long-term sourcing of high-end modified UV 1084 nickel light stabilizer originally manufactured by Cytec, USA.
Amid continuous price hikes of European and American chemical raw materials, extended production lead times of up to 100 days for customized grades from overseas original manufacturers, and rising ocean logistics costs, the client launched a dedicated domestic alternative customization project. It refused generic agricultural-grade mass-produced UV 1084 available on the market and put forward five stringent non-standard customized indicators tailored to its production conditions—all standard mass-produced domestic UV 1084 failed to meet the requirements:
1. Low-color, light gray ultrafine powder: Conventional commercial products are mostly dark green powder, which darkens the substrate and creates a green tint when added to high-transparency modified PE profiles. The client required the finished product to be light gray nearly white with no miscellaneous colors visible to the naked eye.
2. Ultra-high acid-alkali and pesticide erosion resistance: The client’s shed films are constantly exposed to herbicides and acidic foliar fertilizers. Generic UV 1084 readily chelates and loses efficacy when exposed to acidic chemicals, while the customized version must maintain light stabilization retention ≥92% after 72 hours of immersion in 5% dilute acid.
3. High-temperature thermal resistance: Compatible with the client’s 275°C high-speed extrusion process; thermal weight loss ≤0.35% upon short-term heating at 285°C. Ordinary industrial grades start slight decomposition and volatilization at 260°C, causing scaling and fouling at the die head.
4. Precise control of ultrafine particle size: D50 ≤3.5μm to avoid tiny black spot defects caused by agglomeration of additives in transparent modified profiles. Conventional mass-produced grades generally have D50 ranging from 12 to 25μm.
5. Strict control of free nickel impurities: Free nickel residue ≤12ppm to meet heavy metal control requirements under Annex XVII of EU REACH. Generic domestic raw materials typically contain 45–80ppm free nickel, failing to meet European environmental access limits.
The client independently contacted 4 major domestic UV 1084 manufacturers, all of which operated fixed production lines for generic agricultural film grades. Non-standard customization required adjustments to the entire process including synthesis chelation ratio, solvent purification, and post-treatment jet milling, which entailed high technical transformation costs per batch with slim profit margins for small-batch customization. All manufacturers only recommended off-the-shelf generic grades. Three rounds of sample testing on production lines consecutively led to five defects: green discoloration of profiles, rapid aging and failure after pesticide immersion, smoke emission during high-temperature extrusion, tiny black spot defects on sheets, and excessive heavy metals detected by third-party tests. The client invested 32,000 EUR in R&D sampling, putting its domestic customization project on full hold. Upon recommendation by the Italian Plastics Industry Association, the client fully entrusted HiSiaddi to deliver end-to-end customized services covering formula modification, production line technical transformation, lab trials, pilot production and mass manufacturing.
HiSiaddi set up a special team consisting of nickel additive synthesis engineers, polymer application engineers, and EU compliance specialists. It uniformly sampled mass-produced UV 1084 from three top domestic manufacturers for comprehensive physical and chemical testing to pinpoint inherent flaws of generic products:
1. Root cause of color and impurities: Conventional synthesis adopts single-pass crude solvent purification, which fails to remove colored nickel complex byproducts generated during chelation. The powder appears dark green with high residual free nickel ions, resulting in green discoloration of profiles and non-compliance with EU heavy metal regulations.
2. Acid-alkali resistance weakness: Incomplete chelation reactions in ordinary processes lead to weak molecular structural stability. Nickel-phenol coordination bonds break under acidic pesticide environments, causing rapid failure of light-stabilizing components.
3. Thermal resistance defect: Residual low-boiling organic solvents and unreacted intermediates volatilize and decompose above 260°C, causing carbon buildup at extrusion heads and additive migration and blooming.
4. Crude powder processing: Traditional mechanical hammer milling produces coarse particles with broad particle size distribution, leading to uneven dispersion in transparent PE substrates and agglomeration into black spot defects.
5. Insufficient UV absorption stability: Generic raw materials retain low UV absorption at 340nm, resulting in excessive aging rates under long-term outdoor exposure and failure to meet the client’s 5-year outdoor weather resistance standard.
Pain points of domestic manufacturers: Production lines focus on mass-produced low-cost generic agricultural film grades with fixed equipment. Fine non-standard customization requires separate reactor adjustments and retrofitting of post-treatment milling equipment, and manufacturers lack willingness to conduct independent technical transformation due to low returns on small-batch customized orders.
HiSiaddi screened specialized new additive manufacturers with flexible synthetic production lines capable of adjustable chelation processes, and carried out targeted optimization across four links: raw material selection, chelation synthesis, multi-stage purification, and deep powder processing.
1. Adopt high-purity tert-octylphenol and refined n-butylamine raw materials, and implement stepwise temperature-controlled staged chelation reactions to precisely regulate nickel salt feeding ratio and reaction pH value, drastically reducing the generation of uncoordinated free nickel.
2. Add a closed-loop impurity removal process. Stepwise complex precipitation is adopted in the late reaction stage to remove colored byproduct nickel complexes, cutting chromogenic impurities at the synthesis source. The finished product measured 10.3ppm free nickel, below the client’s internal control threshold of ≤12ppm.
Abandoning the industry’s simple single ethanol purification process, HiSiaddi collaborated with the factory to deploy tertiary countercurrent recrystallization using mixed high-purity organic composite solvents, hierarchically removing insoluble colored impurities and easily hydrolyzable byproducts under weak acid conditions. After modification, the powder color shifted from dark green to pale off-white, and molecular chelation structural stability was greatly enhanced. The UV retention rate after 72 hours of immersion in 5% dilute acid reached 93.8%, meeting the customized anti-pesticide corrosion standard.
Dual-stage high-vacuum negative pressure distillation devices were installed on the original single-stage atmospheric solvent removal system to thoroughly eliminate residual solvents and small-molecule intermediates. TGA thermogravimetric testing recorded a thermal weight loss of 0.31% at 285°C, perfectly matching the client’s 275°C high-speed extrusion working conditions and eliminating carbon buildup from high-temperature decomposition.
Traditional mechanical milling equipment was replaced with low-temperature jet milling and precision classification units. Wind pressure and classifier wheel speed were repeatedly calibrated to stabilize the finished D50 within 3.1–3.4μm, enabling uniform dispersion inside resin and completely eliminating black spot defects on profiles.
Custom samples were sent to the client’s R&D laboratory in Italy, mixed into transparent PE substrates at a 0.32% formula ratio and injection molded into test panels. The profiles showed no green discoloration or black spots, and accelerated acid immersion tests passed, clearing the initial formula screening.
Mass pilot production was completed on the factory’s pilot line. HiSiaddi issued tri-lingual COA quality inspection reports (Chinese, English, Italian), SGS heavy metal test reports, and GHS-compliant SDS. The client ran continuous 12-hour industrial extrusion production, and finished products achieved a xenon lamp aging color difference ΔE ≤1.7 after 3000 hours, exceeding the client’s internal control standard of ΔE ≤1.9. All customized indicators passed acceptance.
The client finalized the first formal order of 15 tons customized UV 1084. HiSiaddi coordinated customized neutral moisture-proof export packaging, multi-lingual compliance labels, domestic commodity inspection and customs clearance, and full-container sea freight to Genoa Port, Italy.
1. Optimized procurement costs: The comprehensive unit purchase price of customized domestic UV 1084 dropped by 33% compared with original Cytec products from the US. Lead time was shortened from 100 days to under 30 days, significantly reducing the client’s capital occupation from raw material inventory.
2. Annual framework agreement signed: After acceptance of the first order, the client signed an annual customized procurement framework for 45 tons, scheduled for delivery in 5 monthly batches.
3. Extended customized cooperation on new products: The client later launched a new project of high-end flame-retardant modified RV PP components and again entrusted HiSiaddi to customize flame-retardant special-grade UV 1084.
4. Standardized production line upgrade for upstream factories: Leveraging process data from this customization project, the cooperating factory built a standardized production line for high weather-resistant special UV 1084 and expanded its catalog of high-end customized products. With HiSiaddi’s support, it subsequently developed two additional mid-to-high-end outdoor plastic end clients in Spain and Portugal.
1. Most domestic UV 1084 manufacturers focus on low-end generic agricultural film markets with fixed mass production processes and single product grades. Generic mass-produced materials fail to meet stringent indicators of mid-to-high-end European modified plastics in five dimensions: color, impurities, thermal resistance, particle size, and chemical erosion resistance. Domestic manufacturers lack downstream end-product formula application experience and are reluctant to invest in non-standard fine technical transformation—this constitutes the core barrier preventing domestic nickel-based UV 1084 from entering high-end European supply chains.
2. Core value of HiSiaddi’s foreign trade service: Drawing on domestic fine chemical industrial chain resources and additive application technology reserves, HiSiaddi forms a full technical closed loop covering customized client indicators → synthetic process optimization → multi-stage purification technical transformation → fine powder processing → end-product production line verification, bridging the R&D gap between production factories and high-end overseas clients.
3. Mid-to-high-end European outdoor plastic and high-performance agricultural film clients prioritize technical customized supporting services over unit price, alongside basic physical and chemical indicators of additives, when facing high requirements for chemical resistance, impurity control, and processing compatibility. This capability differentiates technology-driven foreign trade service providers from ordinary spot goods intermediaries.
